Delhi Government Collaborates with IGL for Rainwater Harvesting Project in 75 Schools

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi Government has partnered with Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) and Ehsaas NGO to introduce rainwater harvesting systems in 75 CM Shri Schools. This significant initiative reflects a commitment to promoting water conservation and sustainable development.

As part of the tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the project falls under the ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign, which aims to enhance groundwater recharge and raise awareness about environmental sustainability among students and educators.

The scopes of the programme include restoring existing rainwater harvesting systems and installing new rooftop harvesting structures alongside educational initiatives focusing on water conservation practices.

Government’s Vision for Expansion

During the MoU signing, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the importance of water conservation for a sustainable future. She indicated that the project aligns with the government’s mission to integrate quality education with environmental stewardship, supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Catch the Rain’ initiative.

Gupta emphasised that the initiative will extend beyond the initial 75 schools. Plans are in place to gradually increase the number of participating schools to approximately 800, solidifying rainwater harvesting as a core component of the capital’s public education infrastructure.

Experts will execute technical audits at selected schools to evaluate existing rainwater harvesting systems. The initiative will also focus on cleaning and restoring recharge pits and filtration units, alongside installing advanced rooftop harvesting systems where needed.

Implementation and Responsibilities

Ehsaas NGO has been tasked with implementing the project, ensuring adherence to quality construction, operational efficiency, and compliance with safety regulations. In this partnership, the Directorate of Education (DoE) will provide administrative support and facilitate implementation within the school premises, taking charge of the systems’ maintenance post-completion.

According to officials involved, each school participating in the project is expected to recharge approximately two lakh litres of groundwater each year. This effort aims to enhance groundwater levels and contribute positively to Delhi’s overall water security in the long term.

Delhi’s Education Minister Ashish Sood remarked on the government’s aim to modernise CM Shri Schools by integrating digital infrastructure and incorporating environmental sustainability, the National Education Policy (NEP), and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the educational framework.

Corporate Contributions to Environmental Goals

The initiative represents a broader trend of increased involvement from corporate entities in supporting environmental conservation efforts through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). It underscores the potential of public-private partnerships in enhancing urban infrastructure resilience.

By fostering awareness and education on responsible resource management, the project aims to equip future generations with the skills to engage in sustainable practices. Such initiatives are crucial as urban centres face mounting challenges related to water scarcity and environmental degradation.

The collaboration between the Delhi Government, IGL, and Ehsaas NGO illustrates a forward-thinking approach to blending educational growth with environmental accountability. With the demand for sustainable solutions rising, this project may serve as a model for similar efforts nationwide.
