LinkedIn Introduces AI Reporting Feature Following Study on AI-Generated Content

LinkedIn has announced the addition of an AI reporting feature, which allows its users to flag posts believed to be generated by artificial intelligence. This development follows a recent study that indicated approximately 41 per cent of long-form content on the platform is not authored by humans. The new feature, described as a “Seems like AI slop” button, aims to help the platform manage the influx of AI-generated posts.

Hari Srinivasan, LinkedIn’s Chief Product Officer, addressed the issue in a LinkedIn post, emphasising that combating AI-generated content is a priority for the organisation. He noted that the feature empowers users to report posts they suspect are AI-created, potentially leading to a more authentic content feed.

The introduction of this button may contribute to a notable decrease in generic posts that users often encounter, such as motivational reflections on job losses. By leveraging user feedback, LinkedIn hopes to refine its algorithms, enabling better detection of AI-produced content.

Other Platforms Join the AI Detection Trend

LinkedIn’s initiative is part of a broader movement across various online platforms addressing AI-generated content. Substack, for example, has recently launched its own tool in collaboration with Pangram to help readers discern whether their favourite newsletters contain original thoughts or merely well-crafted prompts. This shift highlights a growing recognition within the industry of the need to maintain content authenticity.

Furthermore, in March, Digg ceased its efforts to create a Reddit alternative due to difficulties in preventing bots from dominating discussions. The overall trend indicates a significant increase in bot traffic on the internet, reportedly surpassing human traffic, raising concerns about the ecosystem’s integrity.

As platforms grapple with the implications of AI on user-generated content, the challenge of distinguishing between human and AI contributions is becoming increasingly complex. Cloudflare’s recent data reinforces the urgency of this issue, suggesting a need for proactive measures from online services.

LinkedIn’s Ongoing Efforts to Combat Bots

Beyond the introduction of the reporting button, LinkedIn has been taking substantial steps to reduce automated interactions on its platform. The company reports blocking hundreds of thousands of bot-generated comments daily. This proactive approach is indicative of the extensive automation efforts that are pervasive in the online environment.

In addition to the reporting feature, LinkedIn is implementing new classification systems designed to detect AI-generated content proactively before it appears in users’ feeds. This move aims to target low-effort posts originating from beyond users’ direct networks, striving to create a more tailored browsing experience.

LinkedIn’s latest initiatives demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the quality of discourse on its platform. With a clearer strategy to counteract the influence of AI-generated content, it seeks to maintain the credibility of user interactions and the relevance of shared discussions.
