Deepika Padukone’s Father Discusses Her Commitment to Mental Health Awareness

The CSR Journal Magazine

Deepika Padukone’s openness about her struggles with depression initiated a national dialogue on mental health in 2015. According to her father, Prakash Padukone, the death of a close friend later that year prompted her to extend her efforts beyond personal disclosure and to work towards increased public awareness.

During an appearance on The Something Bigger Show with Rodrigo Canelas, Prakash Padukone expressed that both he and his wife, Ujjala Padukone, were entirely supportive of Deepika’s decision to publicly address her mental health challenges. He noted that she became one of the first prominent figures in Bollywood to speak candidly about her experiences with depression.

Subsequently, Deepika established The Live Love Laugh Foundation, an organisation aimed at enhancing awareness of mental health issues and diminishing the accompanying stigma. Prakash recounted the family’s encouragement, stating they had no reservations about her going public if it would assist others.

Turning Point and Foundation Development

Prakash Padukone highlighted that the tragic loss of Deepika’s friend marked a pivotal moment in her journey. He mentioned that after this event, she resolved to take action to raise awareness about mental health. It was at this juncture that she began contemplating the inception of the foundation.

In discussions with her parents, Deepika articulated her vision for the foundation, distinguishing it from initiatives typically endorsed by public figures, such as those focused on women’s empowerment or education. Prakash recalled encouraging her, affirming her autonomy in pursuing this significant initiative and expressing his willingness to support her mission.

He emphasised the importance of mental health advocacy that unearths issues without fear or embarrassment, reflecting on how stigma often impedes individuals from seeking help, despite the fact that many mental health disorders are treatable.

Impact of The Live Love Laugh Foundation

Reflecting on nearly a decade since the foundation’s establishment, Prakash underscored its vital contribution to mental health awareness. He articulated the foundation’s core message: individuals should seek professional help for mental health concerns as readily as they would for physical ailments.

Prakash stated, “If someone is feeling anxious, depressed or mentally unwell, they should consult a psychiatrist or another professional. There is no reason to feel shy, afraid or ashamed.” He further stressed that early intervention can sometimes negate the need for medication, allowing individuals to benefit from therapy or counselling instead.

In a conversation with CNBC-TV18 last year, Deepika reflected on the initial scepticism surrounding her decision to advocate for mental health openly. She acknowledged the criticisms that questioned her motives and the potential for her efforts being perceived as a publicity stunt.

Despite facing backlash, Deepika remained focused on the foundation’s primary goal of normalising discussions about mental health issues in India. She expressed a vision for mental health that equates its significance to that of gully cricket in the country, reflecting her commitment to fostering a supportive environment.

On the professional front, Deepika Padukone was last seen in the Telugu science fiction film Kalki: 2898 AD and is set to appear in Siddharth Anand’s King alongside Shah Rukh Khan. Additionally, she has an upcoming project with Atlee featuring Allu Arjun.
