A political confrontation is set to unfold in Pune as Union Home Minister Amit Shah visits the city on August 1. The Congress party has announced its intention to protest against Shah’s presence, highlighting ongoing grievances, especially regarding the NEET examination paper leak issue. Congress City (East) President and former Mayor Prashant Jagtap has called upon party members, students, and other citizens to gather at Seven Loves Chowk at 10:30 am on the day of the event.

The Congress alleges that recent protests by students over the NEET paper leak were met with undue police force, reportedly under orders from the Union Government. They claim that demonstrators faced injuries and subsequent legal actions have been taken against them. The opposition party aims to challenge what it describes as the Centre’s “authoritarian approach,” particularly in regards to the concerns of youth and students.

By mobilising its base, the Congress seeks to channel public dissatisfaction and demonstrate solidarity with affected students during Shah’s high-profile visit.

BJP Requests Permission for Counter-Demonstration

In response to the anticipated protest, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reached out to Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar to seek approval for a counter-demonstration at the same location starting at 10 am on August 1. The BJP criticises the Congress protest as a calculated attempt to tarnish Amit Shah’s official visit, which includes the ceremonial awarding of the Lokmanya Tilak National Award to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

The BJP contends that the award ceremony represents a significant moment for Pune, and alleges that Congress’s actions are politically motivated. In a formal letter to the police, the party cites pride in Doval’s accomplishments and highlights Shah’s influence in landmark decisions, including the abrogation of Article 370, anti-extremism measures, and legislative reforms such as the ban on instant triple talaq.

Furthermore, the BJP has committed to countering the Congress protest, labelling it as opportunism, and has urged law enforcement to facilitate its demonstration, pledging to ensure public safety during this period of heightened political activity.

Heightened Security Measures Ahead of VIP Visit

As preparations ramp up for Amit Shah and Ajit Doval’s visit, security arrangements are being intensified throughout Pune. Authorities are expected to implement comprehensive measures along the route designated for VIP movement. These precautions aim to mitigate any potential disruptions and ensure the safety of all participants involved in the scheduled events.

The police have been put on alert and will likely deploy additional personnel to monitor the protests closely. This response reflects the administration’s commitment to maintaining order during this politically charged occasion.
