David Dhawan Hints at Possible Retirement After Current Project

In an recent interview, veteran filmmaker David Dhawan conveyed his admiration for his son, actor Varun Dhawan, during discussions about their collaborative film, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The director highlighted the strong connection and mutual respect they share, both personally and professionally. He mentioned that this film might symbolise his final directorial undertaking.

Dhawan elaborated on their working relationship, stating, “A director always wants a good actor, that’s the first priority. He’s not just my son; he questions, he understands, and he has already done 13-14 films.” He expressed his satisfaction in working alongside Varun, suggesting that their collaborative efforts have been fruitful.

Despite their familial relationship, Dhawan maintains a strict professional stance during filming. “When I’m behind the camera, he’s not my son; he is an actor. I just need the result,” he explained. This professional dynamic has reportedly fostered a smooth workflow on set, allowing them to efficiently navigate the filmmaking process.

Traditional Filmmaking Methods and Varun’s Evolution

Addressing Varun’s concerns about not receiving the complete script, Dhawan stated, “In our time, films were made on trust.” He noted that even prominent actors like Salman Khan and Govinda did not always receive full scripts during their collaborations. Instead, films were developed through scene narrations, a practice he believes still holds value.

Moreover, Dhawan highlighted Varun’s impressive development as an actor, commending his emotional capacity and performance in previous projects, particularly in Border 2. He referred to Varun’s talent as “brilliant,” demonstrating the director’s pride in his son’s achievements within the industry.

The filmmaker shared a personal anecdote regarding an emotional moment during the film’s production, revealing that Varun offered substantial support during a health issue. “I was very unwell during the shooting of this film. Varun took great care of me, had all doctors’ numbers, stayed in touch with them, and was always there,” Dhawan recounted, illustrating the depth of their familial bond.

Reflections on a Successful Career

With a prolific career that has spanned over three decades and included more than 45 films, David Dhawan expressed contentment about his journey in the film industry. He acknowledged the significant impact of various stars he has collaborated with, including Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Govinda, and Salman Khan, all of whom have contributed to his experiences as a director.

Dhawan credited his mentor, film producer and director Manmohan Desai, for influencing his personal filmmaking style. He remarked on how these experiences have shaped him as a creator, allowing him to evolve and innovate over the years within a competitive industry.

Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai features Varun Dhawan in prominent roles alongside actors Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur. The film marks yet another reunion between father and son, showcasing the light-hearted, comedic style that David Dhawan is known for. It is produced by Ramesh Taurani and is scheduled to hit theatres on June 12, following the earlier release of a teaser to generate anticipation for the film.
