Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister, Bakhtiyor Saidov, met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on August 4, 2026, to discuss enhancing the multifaceted partnership between India and Uzbekistan. During the meeting, Minister Saidov reiterated Uzbekistan’s commitment to expanding political, economic, and parliamentary ties with India.

A press release from the Lok Sabha Secretariat indicated that Saidov emphasised the importance Tashkent places on increasing cooperation in these areas. He remarked on the potential benefits Uzbekistan could gain from India’s extensive legislative experience as the largest democracy in the world. Enhanced engagement at the parliamentary level was identified as a critical element for the advancement of the comprehensive strategic partnership.

During the discussions, Saidov called for a collaborative vision that would focus on trade, investment, joint projects, and emerging sectors as a means for both nations to achieve mutual goals.

Historical Ties and Future Prospects

Speaker Om Birla highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and civilisational connections between India and Uzbekistan, stating that these ties form an essential foundation for their lasting friendship. He expressed optimism that growing political trust, along with increased trade and investment, would further solidify the bilateral relationship in the future.

The two leaders engaged in extensive discussions about various aspects of India-Uzbekistan relations, focusing on parliamentary cooperation, trade, education, culture, and significant regional and global issues. Birla acknowledged India’s status as a vibrant democracy, noting that the 543-member Lok Sabha effectively represents the diverse aspirations of the nation.

Birla informed Minister Saidov about Parliament’s structure, mentioning that it convenes for three sessions annually and is currently engaged in deliberations during the Monsoon Session focusing on key national issues.

Parliamentary Friendship and Bilateral Achievements

Speaker Birla underscored India’s major accomplishments in various fields, including infrastructure development, digital innovation, technology, and connectivity. He pointed out the increasing participation of the youth in leadership roles on a global scale and indicated that collaboration with leading universities and international organisations is on the rise.

He also referred to the establishment of the India-Uzbekistan Parliamentary Friendship Group in March 2026, expressing confidence that this initiative would inject new energy into legislative engagement and deepen economic, educational, and cultural ties between the two nations.

Recalling his participation in the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held in Tashkent in April 2025, Birla spoke about his discussions with notable Uzbek leaders, including President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and other parliamentary officials. He suggested that these high-level exchanges have laid a solid foundation for ongoing cooperation between the parliaments of both countries.
