D. K. Shivakumar Says Mallikarjun Kharge to File Rajya Sabha Nomination Tomorrow

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar confirmed that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will file his nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The filing is scheduled for Friday, June 5, at 12.30 pm. This announcement was made during a press briefing he held on Thursday.

Shivakumar expressed enthusiasm regarding the strength of the Congress Party, stating, “We are very happy,” and highlighted that Rahul Gandhi will also join the event. The Chief Minister mentioned that following Kharge’s nomination, the remaining candidates, including Member of Legislative Councils (MLCs), will proceed to file their nominations.

Shivakumar revealed that out of the five candidates being put forward by the party, four have already been named, with one more expected to be announced shortly. His comments underline the party’s proactive approach to filling the positions in the Upper House.

Shivakumar Reflects on First Day as Chief Minister

During the briefing, the new Chief Minister reflected on his initial experiences in office. He assured that he aims to meet the expectations of the public and intends to keep all promises made during his tenure. “I just had my meetings with all the officers. I will deliver it to the people,” he stated.

Shivakumar acknowledged the challenges faced on the first day, affirming that the expectations remain high. He emphasised a commitment to his leadership under the Congress banner, aiming for effective governance throughout his term.

He also praised BK Hariprasad, the new Karnataka Congress chief, recognising his long-standing loyalty and experience within the party. Hariprasad has previously served as a Rajya Sabha MP four times, and Shivakumar expressed confidence in their collective efforts to regain power.

Details on Congress Candidates for Rajya Sabha

The Congress Party has confirmed the candidacies for the Rajya Sabha elections, naming seven individuals for this round of biennial elections and bypolls across five states. Besides Kharge, other candidates include Pawan Khera, who leads the Congress Media and Publicity Department, and Meenakshi Natarajan, along with Praveen Chakravarty and Pranav Jha.

Kharge, currently serving as the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, is being re-nominated for a term ending later this month. Khera has also been selected to represent Karnataka, while Natarajan will contest from Madhya Pradesh, and Neeraj Dangi has been re-nominated from Rajasthan.

Additionally, Praveen Chakravarty is set to contest from Tamil Nadu, and Pranav Jha is representing Jharkhand. The Election Commission had previously announced the schedule for the biennial elections, issuing a notification on June 1, which marks the commencement of the nomination process. The final date for submitting nominations is set for June 8.
