PV Sindhu Makes History by Reaching Japan Open Semi-Finals

The CSR Journal Magazine

PV Sindhu has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the semi-finals of the Japan Open in 15 years. Her advancement to the final four marks a noteworthy moment in Indian badminton history, particularly following a 15-year gap since Saina Nehwal last achieved the same feat in 2011. This development occurred when former world champion Nozomi Okuhara withdrew from the quarter-finals, granting Sindhu a walkover.

As a result, Sindhu is set to compete against China’s former Olympic champion Chen Yufei in the semi-finals. This upcoming match will be critical for Sindhu as she strives to build on her successful campaign this week in Tokyo.

The excitement surrounding Sindhu’s quarter-final match against Okuhara had reached a peak, owing to the anticipation of a captivating contest, given Okuhara’s reputation and the support of the home crowd. However, Sindhu’s progress without stepping onto the court demonstrates her resilience and readiness for the challenges that lie ahead.

Impressive Performance Throughout the Tournament

Sindhu has displayed commendable form throughout the tournament. She commenced her Japan Open journey with a dominant victory over Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching, winning the match with scores of 21-14 and 21-11. Following this, she produced an exceptional performance against world No.5 Han Yue, where she secured a convincing win in just 35 minutes with scores of 21-16 and 21-14.

This run in Japan adds to Sindhu’s recent achievements in the 2026 season, which have already seen her reaching the semi-finals of both the Malaysia Open Super 1000 and the Australian Open Super 500 earlier this year. Such accomplishments have contributed to her enhanced form and fighting spirit on the international circuit.

Currently ranked amongst the top ten in the world for the first time in nearly three years, Sindhu’s successful outings have regained her position among badminton’s elite. Her comeback followed a challenging period that included injuries and inconsistencies, paving the way for this resurgence.

Challenges Ahead for Sindhu

Looking ahead to the semi-finals, Sindhu faces a formidable opponent in Chen Yufei. Over the past few years, Sindhu has encountered difficulties when competing against the Chinese player, having lost her last five matches against her. This history adds an extra layer of complexity to the upcoming semi-final clash.

For Sindhu to secure her place in the final of the Japan Open, she will need to deliver another outstanding performance, leveraging her recent success and regained confidence. The match promises to be a test of her skills and determination against a player of Chen’s calibre.

With her achievements so far in this tournament and the consistency she has shown throughout the season, Sindhu remains focused on overcoming the challenges that lie ahead as she aims for her maiden Japan Open title.
