Cyprus and India have progressively advanced their bilateral relationship, with President Nikos Christodoulides announcing significant initiatives during a recent meeting. During the discourse, President Christodoulides mentioned the notable strides made in the partnership over the past year, particularly following Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Cyprus. He stated that what began as a strategic framework is now evolving into a substantive partnership delivering practical outcomes. Key areas identified for collaboration include technology, educational exchanges, and economic connectivity, indicating a broadening of the scope of cooperation beyond traditional domains.

The leaders also engaged in discussions on pertinent regional and international issues. A shared resolution to uphold international law and promote effective multilateralism was emphasised, underlining their commitment to the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter. Furthermore, President Christodoulides expressed gratitude towards PM Modi for India’s enduring support regarding Cyprus’s reunification efforts. He reiterated Cyprus’s backing for India’s bid for a reformed United Nations Security Council, acknowledging that the evolving dynamics of global governance necessitate reflection of today’s realities.

Significance of Bilateral Agreements

Prime Minister Modi remarked on the elevation of the India-Cyprus relationship to a Strategic Partnership, asserting that this advancement will inject new ambition into bilateral relations. He highlighted the historical and cultural ties between the two nations, alongside the significant increase in Cypriot investments into India over the last decade, indicating a strong economic linkage that supports the strategic partnership.

During the visit, several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged, which enhance the multifaceted cooperation between the two countries.
