CPI(M) Inducts Lone MLA Mustafizur Rahman Rana into State Committee

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a key organisational move following the recent Assembly election results, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has inducted its lone MLA in the West Bengal Assembly, Mustafizur Rahman Rana, as an ‘Invited Member’ of the party’s State Committee.

Rana, who won from Domkal in Murshidabad, emerged as the sole Left representative in the Assembly, providing the party with a legislative presence after a significant electoral setback. Party insiders see his induction into the State Committee—the CPI(M)’s highest decision-making body at the state level—as both recognition of his victory and a strategic step forward.

Review meeting at Alimuddin Street

The decision was taken during a two-day State Committee meeting held at the party’s Alimuddin Street headquarters, which began on Tuesday. The meeting is focused on a comprehensive review of the party’s performance in the recently concluded Assembly elections. Sources said district committees submitted detailed reports analysing vote shares, results, and organisational shortcomings before the leadership finalised Rana’s inclusion.

As part of the organisational reshuffle, Monalisa Sinha, State Secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), was also inducted into the State Committee.

‘Silver lining’ in political Landscape

According to party sources, the district reports highlighted not only the reasons behind the electoral debacle but also pointed to emerging opportunities. Internal divisions and turbulence within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are believed to have generated renewed interest in the Left at the grassroots level, particularly in minority-dominated regions.

Against this backdrop, the CPI(M) leadership is expected to project Rana as a key face of the party in the coming months. His victory in Murshidabad is seen as significant, positioning him as an effective representative in districts with large minority populations. Plans are reportedly underway to place him at the forefront of major campaigns and outreach initiatives across the state.

Political observers view Rana’s elevation as a calculated move by the CPI(M) to rebuild its organisational strength and reassert its presence in West Bengal’s political landscape. As the party looks to capitalise on shifting dynamics, the lone Left MLA is likely to play a central role in shaping its future strategy.
