The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal has taken over the investigation into controversial election remarks made by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee, significantly increasing the legal challenges mounting against him.

The state investigative agency officially assumed control of the case from the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime police station, receiving all associated case diaries, digital evidence, and social media links.

The Dual Legal Fronts

Banerjee finds himself facing intensive scrutiny across two separate investigations simultaneously:

The “DJ” Threat Case:

The latest CID probe stems from a complaint filed over Banerjee’s campaign-trail statement, where he claimed that “DJs would play on the 4th [of June],” which critics interpreted as an open threat. Investigators are actively compiling video footage and Facebook links related to the speech.

Assembly Signature Forgery Case:

Simultaneously, the CID is probing a high-profile signature forgery case connected to letters sent to the Assembly Speaker. This investigation previously led to CID searches at Banerjee’s residence and the TMC central office at 30B Harish Chatterjee Street in Kalighat.

High Court Intervention and Scheduled Interrogation

The escalation coincides with Banerjee’s return to Kolkata from Delhi on Thursday afternoon, where he was greeted by protestors chanting anti-corruption slogans at the airport.

While the Calcutta High Court provided Banerjee temporary relief by granting him a 14-day protection from arrest, the bench made it explicitly clear that he must fully cooperate with the ongoing investigations. Despite having skipped three previous summonses by the agency, the court’s directives maintain heavy pressure on the TMC leader as the CID builds its parallel cases.
