A police inspector linked to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Bengaluru has been arrested due to his alleged involvement in a robbery amounting to Rs 20 lakh. Authorities reported on Saturday that Inspector Mahesh Kanakagiri is suspected of orchestrating the theft, which transpired at a hotel in Madiwala. The victims, two young men from Kerala, were reportedly in possession of this significant sum while staying at the hotel.

On Thursday, a group claiming to be police personnel approached the victims, displaying identity cards to assert their credibility. They interrogated the young men about the origin of their cash, alleging involvement in illegal money trading. Following this, the suspects ostensibly demanded the cash, ultimately fleeing with the money in a jeep parked outside the hotel.

Investigation and Arrests

Initial investigations began after the victims discovered they had been deceived and subsequently filed a complaint at the Madiwala police station. A senior police officer involved in the case revealed that one of the victims was informed by a friend about opportunities for investing money in trading for high returns. This prompted them to carry a large sum in cash.

As the investigation progressed, detectives arrested two accomplices identified as Kupendra Reddy and Vasanth Kumar, which ultimately led to the realisation of Inspector Kanakagiri’s alleged role in the conspiracy. The trio reportedly engaged in a well-orchestrated plan that included assaulting the victims during the robbery.

Authorities have confirmed that the entirety of the stolen amount has been recovered. Investigators are presently delving deeper into the dealings of the gang, which disguised itself as law enforcement officials to carry out the theft.

Legal Actions and Future Developments

Following the arrests, further legal actions are expected as investigators look to establish the complete network of associates involved in the scheme. A senior officer confirmed that the police are gathering evidence to support their case against the arrested individuals.

The police have reiterated their commitment to addressing such criminal activities, particularly those involving impersonation of police personnel, which undermine public trust in the law enforcement system. This incident has raised significant concern within the community about the means employed by criminals to deceive unsuspecting victims.

Authorities are urging anyone who might have information related to similar incidents to come forward. In addition, ongoing efforts are being made to enhance security measures in hotels and other public spaces to prevent such occurrences in the future.
