CID Conducts Raids at Mamata Banerjee’s Residence and Abhishek Banerjee’s Office

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an investigation into allegations of signature forgery involving Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs. This inquiry has resulted in a significant disruption within the party. On Tuesday, a CID team conducted a raid at the residence of Mamata Banerjee, former Chief Minister of West Bengal, which also serves as the central office for the TMC.

Accompanying local police personnel, the squad of investigators was supported by a significant number of women police officers. They reached Mamata Banerjee’s residence located at 30B Harish Chatterjee Street in the late afternoon hours.

Initial access to the premises was complicated by a brief standoff with some security personnel, alongside a party leader. Following this, the officials commenced their search and verification activities inside the residence, according to eyewitness sources.

Search Operations at Abhishek Banerjee’s Office

While the main operation unfolded at Mamata Banerjee’s property, another group of CID officials simultaneously arrived at the office of Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the TMC and the nephew of Mamata Banerjee. This marked a significant day for the party amid ongoing controversies regarding the legitimacy of signatures attributed to its legislators.

The investigations were reportedly prompted by a notice issued earlier by the CID, seeking information about the alleged forging of signatures on a proposal, which was submitted for recognition of the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. The developments suggest a widening scope of the inquiry as the CID seeks to clarify the allegations within the TMC.

Sources state that the operations form part of a broader investigation initiated after obtaining responses from involved parties, including Abhishek Banerjee. The responses included potential details regarding where the signatures of the MLAs were reportedly collected.

Official Statements and Responses

According to a CID officer present during the raid at Mamata Banerjee’s residence, the action was a direct result of a reply submitted by Abhishek Banerjee. He confirmed that the signatures of the legislators were collected from the TMC central office located at the same address as Mamata Banerjee’s residence. The CID, therefore, deemed it necessary to conduct searches based on this information.

Abhishek Banerjee was reportedly summoned by the CID to appear for questioning by 5 pm on Tuesday in connection with the ongoing case. He was in New Delhi at the time, alongside Mamata Banerjee, who is also engaged in political discussions in the national capital.

The situation remains fluid as the CID continues its investigative efforts. The splits within the TMC sparked by these allegations are notable, especially given the party’s current standing within the state. With several key figures under scrutiny, the proceedings will be closely monitored by both political observers and the public alike.
