Mayawati, the chief of the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP), has declared that she will be solely responsible for selecting candidates for the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2027. In a recent announcement on X, she emphasised that all candidate nominations will be finalised by her and not by her nephew, Akash Anand. This statement reflects her intention to maintain control over the party’s electoral strategies.

In her communication, the four-time Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh articulated that her authority extends beyond Uttar Pradesh, encompassing all regions where general Assembly and Lok Sabha elections are conducted. She asserted that the final candidate selections will be under her jurisdiction, underscoring her central role in the party’s operations.

Mayawati also indicated that she has engaged in multiple meetings with party officials at the state office in Lucknow to facilitate the candidate selection process. During these discussions, she claimed to have confirmed approximately two dozen candidates after personal consultations and adherence to necessary formalities.

Clarifications on Akash Anand’s Role

Amid the focus on her leadership, Mayawati addressed recent social media assertions alleging that Akash Anand was granted significant authority in candidate selection. She clarified that while he is permitted to announce candidates for certain Assembly seats, these nominations would ultimately be those finalised by her. This arrangement aims to delineate their respective roles in the upcoming election procedures.

Mayawati elaborated on Anand’s responsibilities, stating that he would be involved in public meetings where announcements regarding candidates will be made, but only with her prior consent. This stipulation reinforces her dominance within the party, ensuring that all decisions align with her directives.

Such clarifications arise as the BSP navigates internal dynamics, especially in light of recent controversies. The party has faced scrutiny following allegations of a ‘cash-for-ticket’ scheme that reportedly emerged from a media sting operation. These claims suggested that some party officials discussed substantial payments required for securing nominations, casting a shadow over the party’s electoral integrity.

Addressing Controversies and Allegations

The controversies regarding ticket distribution became particularly pronounced after the sting operation was publicised. Allegations indicated that prospective candidates could be asked to pay anywhere between Rs 3.35 crore and Rs 3.5 crore for an Assembly election ticket. Furthermore, the report claimed that arranging a meeting with Mayawati could incur a fee of approximately Rs 5 lakh.

However, Mayawati has firmly dismissed these allegations, asserting confidence in the integrity of her party functionaries. She termed the sting operation’s findings as unfounded, reiterating her commitment to uphold transparency and propriety within the BSP’s electoral processes.

The BSP, under her leadership, is making strategic plans as it moves towards the 2027 Assembly elections. Mayawati’s proactive measures include direct involvement in candidate selection, aiming to strengthen the party’s position and address both internal and external challenges in a politically charged environment.
