Chhattisgarh Assembly Approves Freedom of Religion Bill 2026 to Address Illegal Conversions

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Chhattisgarh Assembly has passed the Freedom of Religion Bill 2026, an initiative aimed at curbing illegal conversions and promoting social harmony, according to Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. He emphasized the significance of this legislation in safeguarding the cultural identity of the state and maintaining social balance. CM Sai delivered these remarks while extending greetings for the Hindu New Year and Chaitra Navratri, during which he prayed for prosperity and well-being across Chhattisgarh.

Legislation Designed to Ensure Transparency and Lawfulness in Religious Conversions

As per the Chief Minister’s Office, the new law mandates that any process of religious conversion must be transparent and lawful. It requires individuals seeking conversion to inform an authorized officer in advance, followed by a public notice and scrutiny within a specified timeframe. This aims to prevent conversions that occur under inducement, pressure, or misinformation, particularly targeting vulnerable groups. CM Sai elaborated on the shortcomings of the previous law, stating that the new provisions incorporate stricter penalties, thereby enabling more effective action against offenders.

Legislative Intent to Prevent Social Imbalance and Unrest

CM Sai voiced concerns that unregulated conversions could lead to social unrest and imbalance. He asserted that the new legislation is pivotal in strengthening social peace and harmony, as well as upholding the cultural values of the region. The Chief Minister also honored the legacy of the late Dilip Singh Judeo, noting his efforts to raise awareness against religious conversions continue to inspire societal change. He asserted that positive transformation in this arena would depend significantly on public awareness and active participation.

Confidence in Enhanced Transparency and Social Unity

The Chief Minister expressed optimism that the enactment of the Freedom of Religion Bill 2026 will promote greater transparency and justice, fostering social unity within Chhattisgarh. He articulated a vision of establishing the state as a culturally rich and balanced entity. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has also introduced a draft of the Freedom of Religion Bill 2026, which includes provisions for imprisonment to deter instances of forced or fraudulent religious conversions.

Similar Legislative Efforts in Maharashtra

The Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill aims to prevent conversions executed through force, fraud, coercion, or other misleading means. This aligns with Chhattisgarh’s legislative efforts and underscores a broader regional initiative to address concerns related to unauthorized religious conversions. The developments in both states reflect a growing focus on maintaining social harmony and upholding cultural integrity in a diverse society.
