Chaos in Bhatpara: CISF Personnel Shot Amid Violent TMC-BJP Face-Off

The CSR Journal Magazine

With only 48 hours remaining before the 2026 Assembly Elections, the Jagatdal and Bhatpara areas have descended into chaos following a violent confrontation between Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party supporters. The escalation resulted in a Central Investigative Security Force personnel sustaining a gunshot wound and the subsequent arrest of a TMC councillor.

Midnight Mayhem at the Police Station

The unrest reportedly began late Sunday night when BJP candidate Rajesh Sharma arrived at the local police station to file a complaint against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. According to Sharma, the situation turned volatile when a mob of nearly 200 TMC workers allegedly stormed the station premises.

“They attacked us right inside the station while the police remained bystanders,” Sharma claimed.

Upon hearing of the confrontation, Noapara candidate Arjun Singh rushed to the scene. He alleged that local police locked themselves inside the station while the mob engaged in physical brawls, stone-pelting, and vandalism outside the gates.

Gunfire and Injuries

The violence shifted toward the residence of BJP candidate Pawan Singh. Witnesses report that a crowd began hurling stones at the property, prompting Yogesh Sharma, a CISF jawan assigned to Singh’s security detail, to intervene.

During the skirmish, a firearm was discharged. Sharma was struck in the leg by a bullet and was immediately rushed to a local medical facility before being transferred to a private hospital on Kolkata’s EM Bypass for specialized treatment.

Law Enforcement Action and Political Fallout

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken serious note of the incident, demanding an immediate and detailed report from district authorities. In the aftermath of the clash:

Four individuals, including a TMC councillor, have been arrested.

Police are currently conducting “combing operations” to locate the Vice Chairman of Bhatpara and another local councillor.

Security has been significantly bolstered throughout the Jagatdal constituency to prevent further retaliatory violence.

War of Words

The incident has sparked a fierce verbal battle between the rival parties. Jay Prakash Majumdar, TMC State Vice-President, dismissed the allegations, accusing the BJP of manipulating the administration. “The police and administration are currently operating under the thumb of the Election Commission and the BJP. Arjun Singh is a known provocateur,” Majumdar stated.

Conversely, the BJP leadership has condemned the “state-sponsored violence,” calling it a desperate attempt to intimidate voters ahead of the polls. As of Monday morning, the atmosphere in Bhatpara remains tense, with a heavy deployment of central forces patrolling the streets.
