Chandigarh Liquor Vendor Arrested for Serving Alcohol-Laced Ice Golas

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a peculiar turn of events in Chandigarh, a liquor vendor’s promotional activity has led to significant public outrage after videos surfaced online showing alcohol being served with ice golas, or snow cones. The incident, which occurred in the Sector 9 market, quickly ignited debates over legality and public decency when clips of this unusual event went viral on various social media platforms.

The videos depict a group of individuals outside the liquor shop pouring drinks onto the snow cones and distributing them openly to passersby. This unconventional marketing strategy was quickly dubbed “Liquor Langar” by users online, who largely condemned the act for its blatant disregard for acceptable public behaviour.

Police Investigation and Arrests Made

In response to the backlash, local authorities acted quickly to address the situation. Chandigarh Police arrested the owner of the liquor vending establishment and initiated a thorough investigation into the promotional event. Officials discovered that flavoured vodka was used in the preparation of the beverages served with the ice golas, raising further concerns regarding compliance with local alcohol regulations.

Chandigarh’s Deputy Commissioner, Nishant Yadav, confirmed the police action, stating, “A video went viral showing liquor being served in the open outside a liquor shop in Sector 9. An FIR has been registered against whoever had organised this arrangement.” His comments highlighted the urgency with which the authorities are treating this case, citing the importance of maintaining public order.

Yadav also indicated that a notice had been sent to the license holder of the liquor shop, warning that engaging in similar activities would result in stringent repercussions. “We have conveyed a stern message to all licensees: if anyone engages in such activities outside their shops, which constitutes a violation of the Excise Policy, the Department will take strict action against them,” he elaborated.

Public Reactions and Broader Conversations

The event has prompted wider discussions about the ethics of alcohol promotions in public spaces and the potential implications of such marketing strategies. Many individuals on social media expressed their disbelief and criticism, arguing that inviting the public to participate in alcohol consumption in bustling areas is inappropriate.

While some users resorted to humour, creating memes around the term “Liquor Langar,” others emphasised the need for stricter regulations governing public alcohol promotions. The incident has raised essential questions regarding the responsible behaviour of businesses in serving alcohol, particularly during a heatwave when people are out and about in search of refreshments.

As the investigation progresses, the Chandigarh authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing the Excise Policy rigorously. This case serves as a reminder of the need for responsible marketing practices and adherence to regulations, especially in densely populated urban areas. The outcome of this incident will likely influence future promotional activities for alcoholic beverages within the region.
