FSSAI Prohibits Sale of Alcohol Brands for Artificial Flavouring

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has prohibited the sale of several rum and whisky brands marketed by Diageo India’s United Spirits, Inbrew Beverages, and Mohan Rocky Springwater. This decision follows laboratory tests that revealed some manufacturers have been adding artificial flavours intended for their alcoholic beverages, such as rum flavouring in rum or whisky flavouring in whisky. The regulatory body has heightened scrutiny to enhance compliance with safety standards affecting food products.

List of Prohibited Alcohol Brands

The FSSAI has listed specific brands that are no longer permitted for sale. Among the names mentioned are Antiquity Blue Whisky, Royal Challenge Whisky, and various rum options from McDowell. The ban also includes Inbrew’s Bagpiper Deluxe Whisky and Old Cask Deluxe XXX Rum, which are produced in Madhya Pradesh. Notably, certain variants of Old Monk Rum, including Old Monk The Legend, Old Monk Gold Reserve, and Old Monk XXX Matured Rum manufactured in Maharashtra, are also under the ban.

This action demonstrates the FSSAI’s commitment to ensuring that all alcoholic beverages adhere to established production standards. By prohibiting these brands, the authority aims to safeguard consumer interests and health while promoting transparency in the market.

FSSAI’s recent measures exemplify its proactive approach to maintaining safety in the alcoholic beverage sector amidst growing concerns about quality and authenticity.

Reasons for the Ban on These Brands

The FSSAI’s rationale for banning these specific brands is attributed to the utilisation of artificial flavouring rather than relying on traditional ageing processes for enhancing flavour. The regulatory body reported that the investigated products have been deemed substandard due to the presence of synthetic or nature-identical flavours. As indicated in a statement from FSSAI, “there is no internationally recognised manufacturing practice whereby rum flavour is added to rum or whisky flavour is added to whisky.” This stance reinforces the authority’s commitment to preserving the integrity of alcoholic beverages.

According to the FSSAI, these artificial flavours enable companies to circumvent the maturing process and avoid utilising natural ingredients such as molasses, malt, or grapes. This alteration in manufacturing practices raises questions about quality and adherence to traditional production methods.

As the authority continues to monitor compliance, it aims to ensure that all alcoholic products are brewed and marketed according to recognised standards to protect consumers effectively.

Recent FSSAI Activities to Ensure Consumer Safety

This prohibition of liquor brands aligns with FSSAI’s wider initiative to enhance consumer safety and regulate the food and beverage sector more stringently. Recently, the authority also imposed a ban on various Dabur products, including honey, apple cider vinegar, and coconut products, due to misleading claims of being ‘100% pure.’ Additionally, FSSAI has deemed it necessary for manufacturers of high-caffeine beverages marketed as “energy drinks” to cease using that designation, a decision prompted by concerns surrounding regulatory compliance from brands like Pepsi and Red Bull.

The sequence of actions taken by FSSAI reflects an ongoing effort to address challenges within the food and beverage industry regarding consumer safety. By tightening regulations, FSSAI aims to enforce compliance and encourage manufacturers to adhere to ethical production standards.

The authority’s efforts signal a broader commitment to enhancing public health and well-being through stringent regulations within the food and beverage landscape. With these developments, consumers can expect more transparency and integrity in the products available on the market.
