Centre Appoints Telangana IAS Patil as Deputy DG in Shipping Ministry

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Government of India has appointed Prashant Jeevan Patil, an officer of the Telangana cadre of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), as the Deputy Director General at the Directorate General of Shipping in Mumbai. This appointment was confirmed following an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on July 18, 2023, under the Central Staffing Scheme.

Patil’s tenure is established for five years, effective from the date he assumes charge of his new role or until any further instructions are provided. The Telangana government has been requested to relieve him of his current responsibilities promptly to facilitate this transition.

In this new position, Patil will be working under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, contributing to the operational management and strategic oversight of shipping activities in India.

Additional Appointments in Central Ministries

In a separate development, Ishaan Sharma, an officer of the Indian Railways Accounts Service (IRAS), has also received a new assignment. According to the same notification from the DoPT, Sharma has been appointed as Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi. His tenure is set for four years, commencing from the day he takes charge of his new post or until any further directives are issued.

As part of the appointment process, the Railway Board has been instructed to release Sharma from his duties in the Ministry of Railways immediately to ensure a smooth transition to his new role in Delhi. This move highlights the ongoing commitment of the Indian government to fill key administrative roles within central ministries with qualified personnel.

Both appointments demonstrate a focus on enhancing governance efficiency and strategic administrative oversight in crucial sectors such as shipping and internal security.

Recent Appointments by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet

Earlier in July, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) also sanctioned the appointment of Lokhande Prashant Sitaram, a 2001-batch IAS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre, as the Additional Secretary in the Department of Home under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The DoPT has indicated that Lokhande will continue to hold the additional responsibilities associated with his current position as Chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) within the Ministry of Education. This dual role underscores the importance of integrating educational policies with broader home affairs.

According to the ACC’s order, this arrangement aims to utilise Lokhande’s extensive administrative experience while ensuring continuity in leadership across both sectors. The government’s approach to these appointments reflects a strategic effort to boost operational effectiveness within key organisations.
