The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has initiated a nationwide campaign focusing on opposition to E20 fuel, set to commence with town hall meetings from August 8, 2026. The first meeting of the campaign will take place in West Bengal, with subsequent events planned until August 17. This initiative aims to raise awareness among the public regarding the implications of E20 fuel, which is petrol blended with a 20 per cent ethanol content.

During a press conference, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh disclosed that party leader Arvind Kejriwal has instructed him, along with Delhi unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj, to organise these town hall sessions. The party expressed its intent to highlight concerns over the impact of E20 fuel on vehicle performance and the potential dangers associated with its implementation.

Singh outlined the schedule for the upcoming meetings, which are set to extend across various Indian states. After the launch in West Bengal, events will occur in Gujarat and Haryana on August 9, followed by Telangana on August 11. Subsequent meetings are planned for Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh on August 14, Kerala on August 15, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and Odisha on August 16, concluding with gatherings in Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on August 17.

Concerns Raised About E20 Compatibility

Sanjay Singh communicated the party’s concern that approximately 30 crore vehicles within the country may not be suitable for the E20 fuel blend, potentially leading to widespread complications for motorists. The issue was underscored by his remarks regarding the Centre’s policy on the fuel blend, which he alleges lacks adequate consideration of existing vehicle capabilities.

In a session before Parliament, on July 30, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari addressed concerns related to E20 fuel by acknowledging a possible decrease in fuel economy. He mentioned that the performance impact would typically range from 2 to 6 per cent based on vehicle type and age. Nevertheless, he assured that thorough testing has yielded no evidence of engine failures linked to E20 usage, assuring the public of its safety.

Singh also referenced an earlier town hall event that AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal hosted in Delhi, during which he asserted that over seven lakh participants had engaged online. Following this, the party submitted approximately 2.33 lakh representations to the Prime Minister’s office expressing opposition to the fuel blend.

Political Mobilisation Against E20 Fuel Implementation

The AAP leadership has been vocal about its stance against the E20 initiative, asserting that it has been imposed upon the populace without proper consultation. During an incident on August 2, Kejriwal attempted to deliver a petition with more than 2.30 lakh signatures to the Prime Minister’s residence but encountered resistance from Delhi Police, leading him and fellow leaders to stage a sit-in on Firoz Shah Road.

The party’s actions demonstrate a clear intention to mobilise public sentiment against the E20 fuel policy by raising awareness through these town hall meetings. With the campaign set in motion, AAP aims to extend its message across India, engaging with citizens about the planned implementation of E20 fuel and its potential ramifications for vehicle performance.

The nationwide outreach is aimed at galvanising support and emphasising AAP’s concerns regarding the government’s fuel policy, reflecting a significant political movement as the campaign unfolds in the forthcoming days.
