CBI Takes Over Karur Stampede Probe; Vijay to Meet Victims’ Families Tomorrow

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Karur stampede case, which claimed 41 lives and left more than 60 people injured, has been taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The tragedy occurred during a political rally of actor-turned-politician Vijay, founder of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party.

A special CBI team has visited the Velusamypuram site in Karur, Tamil Nadu, where the incident took place. As per protocol, the agency has re-registered the FIR and informed the local court about the transfer of investigation.

Why Did the CBI Take Over the Case?

A petition filed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in the Supreme Court sought an independent probe into the incident. Acting on this plea, the Supreme Court ordered the transfer of the case to the CBI.

A bench comprising Justices J. K. Maheshwari and N. V. Anjaria directed the CBI Director to lead the probe, with other officials assigned to assist. The top court also set up a three-member supervisory committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi, to oversee the progress of the investigation.

Stress on Fair Investigation

The September 27 stampede was a tragic event that, according to the court, “left an imprint on the minds of citizens across the nation.” The bench emphasized that the case has serious implications for citizens’ right to life and justice.

The court also noted the political overtones of the case and criticized remarks made by senior police officials in public, which it said could undermine public confidence in an impartial investigation.

“The faith and trust of the general public in the process of investigation must be restored,” the bench observed. “One way to instil such trust is by ensuring that the investigation in the present case is completely impartial, independent, and unbiased.”

The judges further stressed that a fair and transparent investigation is essential, as the incident has shaken the nation’s conscience and demands unbiased scrutiny to uphold justice.

Vijay to Meet Families of Karur Stampede Victims Tomorrow

A month after the tragic Karur stampede, the family members of the victims are scheduled to meet actor-politician Vijay on Monday.

According to sources, the meeting will take place at a resort in Mamallapuram, near Chennai. About 50 rooms have been booked at the resort by Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to facilitate the meetings, allowing him to interact with each family personally.

Sources said this gesture aims to provide an opportunity for Vijay to meet the bereaved families directly and offer his condolences in person.
