CBI Probe in Twisha Sharma Death Case A “Ray of Hope”: Family

The CSR Journal Magazine

The family of Twisha Sharma has welcomed the Madhya Pradesh government’s recommendation for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into her death. Meenakshi Sharma, Twisha’s cousin, described this development as a “ray of hope,” emphasising the family’s belief that a more impartial investigation could yield justice. Speaking to ANI, she expressed concern over the fairness of local investigations and hopes that the CBI will be able to retrieve crucial evidence that allegedly had been tampered with by Twisha’s in-laws.

Meenakshi Sharma further highlighted the family’s distress following the emergence of an audio clip involving Twisha’s brother, Major Harshit Sharma, and her mother-in-law, Giribala Singh. In this conversation, it is alleged that Twisha’s character was called into question, leading her cousin to describe Singh’s comments as indicative of a “depraved mentality.” This revelation has heightened the family’s fears regarding the treatment Twisha received from her in-laws.

Timeline of Events Following Twisha’s Death

Twisha Sharma, originally from Noida, married Bhopal resident Samarth Singh in December 2025. Tragically, she was found deceased at her matrimonial home on May 12. Following her death, her family accused her husband and in-laws of subjecting her to mental torment and dowry harassment. The local police quickly registered a case and established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter more thoroughly.

On May 22, Samarth Singh, who has been evading law enforcement, reportedly arrived at a court in Jabalpur with plans to surrender. His advocate, Saurabh Sunder, stated that an application would be submitted to the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) regarding his return to face the charges stemming from Twisha’s death.

The Madhya Pradesh government’s recommendation for a CBI investigation came earlier that day, allowing the agency to assume responsibility for the ongoing investigation. This shift has been met with anticipation among the Sharma family who hope the CBI’s involvement will improve the handling of the case.

Concerns Over Police Investigation and Delayed Actions

Twisha’s sister-in-law, Dr Rashi Oberoi Sharma, expressed appreciation for the initiation of the CBI probe but noted that the decision came too late. She remarked that the family had to push for this inquiry due to perceived failures within the initial investigation. Delays in registering the First Information Report (FIR), as well as pressure placed on the family to conduct last rites before the completion of a post-mortem, raised significant concerns regarding the officiating authorities’ conduct.

Dr Sharma detailed several lapses in the forensic investigation, noting discrepancies in the post-mortem report and the failure to submit critical ligature materials for forensic analysis. She described the conduct of the Madhya Pradesh police as “dubious” and “shoddy,” asserting that the inaccuracies in reporting made it unacceptable for the family to fully process their grief. As of the latest updates, Twisha’s body had remained in the mortuary for over a week, complicating the family’s mourning.

Dr Sharma emphasized the family’s desire for a thorough and accurate investigation, insisting that they could not accept a flawed report. The family’s struggles to attain justice for Twisha reflect broader concerns about the treatment of such cases within local law enforcement, motivating their appeal for independent oversight through the CBI’s involvement.
