CBI Deepens Investigation Into Murder of Suvendu Adhikari’s PA

The CSR Journal Magazine

Investigators from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) arrived at the location in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas, on May 12. This site is the scene of the lethal attack on Chandranath Rath, who served as a personal assistant to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The CBI has initiated a thorough inquiry following the tragic event.

A CBI official, when approached for information, confirmed that their operations are underway but chose not to disclose further details pertaining to the ongoing investigation. The agency had previously taken over the murder inquiry, indicating a significant prioritisation of this case given its political implications.

Formation of Special Investigation Team

According to sources, the CBI has constituted a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to manage the case. This team will be led by an officer of the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG). The creation of this specialised unit underscores the seriousness with which the agency is treating the murder of Rath, who had a background in the Indian Air Force.

Rath was reportedly shot dead late at night on May 6, 2023, near Madhyamgram, after which he succumbed to his injuries in a local hospital. Following the incident, the court remanded three suspects—Mayank Raj Mishra, Vicky Maurya, and Raj Singh—into police custody until May 24, 2023. These individuals were arrested in connection with the crime, reportedly based on leads uncovered during the investigation.

The public prosecutor, Advocate Bivas Chatterjee, mentioned that the prosecution has requested additional charges related to the destruction of evidence, which the court has subsequently approved. This move reflects the legal complexities surrounding the investigation and the necessity of ensuring that all facets of the case are thoroughly addressed.

Multiple Arrests Following Investigation

The three accused were detained in Buxar, Bihar, and Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, with their formal arrests occurring after a series of interrogations on May 10 and 11, 2023. The prompt actions taken by law enforcement agencies highlight their commitment to resolving this case expeditiously.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has publicly described the murder as “premeditated,” alleging that Rath was targeted due to his affiliation with him. He stated that the operation appeared carefully planned, indicating prior surveillance of the victim prior to the attack. Such claims have intensified the scrutiny surrounding Rath’s murder, elevating it beyond an ordinary crime scene investigation.

The political ramifications of this incident have prompted the Trinamool Congress party to call for a court-monitored CBI investigation, emphasising the need for an impartial inquiry into the events surrounding Rath’s demise. Similarly, the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee has demanded an independent investigation under judicial supervision, further underscoring the case’s significance in the political landscape of West Bengal.
