Buying a Car Above Rs 10 Lakh? Check TCS Details or Risk Missing Tax Credit in ITR Filing

The CSR Journal Magazine

Purchasing a car for over Rs 10 lakh entails more than just an elevated monthly EMI or increased insurance expenses. Buyers are also subject to an additional tax charge that many may overlook or fail to claim during their income tax submissions. When acquiring such a vehicle, dealerships collect a 1 per cent Tax Collected at Source (TCS) and remit it to the government along with the buyer’s Permanent Account Number (PAN).

This TCS amount is often obscured in the bill, causing a significant number of individuals to miss out on potential tax credits. Consequently, many taxpayers do not realise that this credit could lessen their final tax obligation or enhance their refund upon filing their Income Tax Return (ITR).

The Tax Collected at Source is governed by Section 206C(1F) of the Income Tax Act, mandating that dealers collect this tax on motor vehicle transactions exceeding Rs 10 lakh. For instance, a purchase of a car priced at Rs 15 lakh would incur TCS amounting to Rs 15,000, which the dealer must collect at the time of sale.

Understanding TCS as a Tax Credit

The distinction between tax credit and refund often causes confusion among buyers. TCS operates as a tax credit, akin to Tax Deducted at Source (TDS). The TCS amount is not a discrete cashback but rather offsets the overall tax liability for the buyer when filing ITR.

If a buyer’s total tax payments—inclusive of TCS, TDS, and any advance tax—exceed their actual tax obligation, this overpaid amount may be refunded. Conversely, if the buyer’s tax liability is greater than the total taxes paid, the TCS will apply against their outstanding dues.

Taxpayers can verify the TCS collected during a vehicle purchase in their Form 26AS or Annual Information Statement (AIS). Since these documents are linked to the buyer’s PAN, individuals can cross-check whether the dealer has appropriately deposited the TCS amount.
