The landscape of software engineering is reportedly undergoing significant changes, primarily due to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Boris Cherny, the creator of Anthropic’s Claude Code, asserts that the traditional roles within software engineering may begin to disappear by the end of this year. AI coding tools are not only writing code and fixing bugs but are also creating applications autonomously. Cherny notes that as these tools evolve, the perception of software engineering as a stable profession is shifting.

In an interview with Platformer, Cherny expressed concerns that the title of “software engineer” might soon lose relevance as AI agents take over an increasing number of coding tasks. He clarified, however, that this evolution does not imply an immediate and total elimination of engineering positions. The transformation is expected to reshape the nature of software teams rather than entirely displacing workers.

Cherny elaborated on how various roles within software development are changing. He indicated that product managers, designers, and other stakeholders are now able to produce software using AI tools without relying predominantly on software engineers. This shift allows engineers to focus more on planning, testing, and overseeing AI systems, suggesting that their traditional responsibilities may evolve into entirely different functions in the future.

Rethinking Engineering Roles and Responsibilities

Cherny shared his personal experience, revealing that he has not personally written code in over six months, as Claude handles nearly all coding tasks for him. He remarked on the blending of roles within software development, indicating that the distinction between engineering and other positions is becoming less clear. “We can call it a builder, we can keep calling it an engineer but the role is changing,” he stated.

Despite the growing capabilities of AI in software engineering, Cherny acknowledged that challenges remain. He pointed out that AI still encounters difficulties when dealing with complex enterprise codebases, particularly in organisations such as NASA. Hence, while coding is a crucial aspect of engineering, substantial portions of the role focus on brainstorming, debugging, and strategising product development.

Regarding the future job market, Cherny suggested that the impact of AI on employment in software engineering could present a mixed outcome. Some organisations may require fewer engineers due to increased productivity driven by AI. Nevertheless, other companies might expand their teams in response to the opportunity to launch new products at a faster pace. “There’s going to be a lot of companies that need less engineers because engineers are more productive,” he explained.

Future Opportunities Remain for Emerging Engineers

Cherny maintained his view that entry-level positions within software engineering will continue to be available despite concerns over the disappearance of traditional titles. He described the current period as a “golden age” for startups, as AI tools equip small teams to develop products and businesses at previously unattainable scales. Cherny encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to take advantage of this moment, stating, “It’s just like there’s never been a better time in history to start a startup.”

As developments in AI technology continue to unfold, the software engineering profession may need to adapt rapidly to the evolving environment. Cherny’s insights reflect a broader trend within the industry, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for professionals in this field.
