India Sees Significant Growth in Diesel Locomotives and Electronics Exports

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s export sector is experiencing diversification, particularly in high-growth products such as diesel-electric locomotives, printed circuit boards, and wireless speakers. Recent data from the Ministry of Commerce indicates substantial increases in outbound shipments of these goods over the past fiscal year. The analysis reveals remarkable growth in various categories, signalling a shift in the export landscape.

Diesel-electric locomotives have emerged as a standout category, with exports climbing dramatically to $107.18 million in FY26 from a mere $0.95 million in FY25. Similarly, arabica coffee cherry exports surged from $0.53 million to $18.27 million, while populated printed circuit boards jumped significantly from $79.43 million to an impressive $1.61 billion. Moreover, exports of true wireless stereo sound devices saw a marked increase of more than sixfold, reaching $202.26 million.

Overall, nearly 20 per cent of India’s export categories recorded growth rates exceeding 100 per cent last year. This rapid expansion has led to the total value of these high-growth segments skyrocketing to over Rs 3 lakh crore in FY26, rising from Rs 1.41 lakh crore in FY25. The data underscores India’s increasing integration into global manufacturing supply chains within various sectors, notably electronics.

Growth in Electronics and Transportation Exports

The surge in electronic exports is notable, with printed circuit boards, OLED components for mobile devices, and transmission apparatus all displaying robust performance. Exports of OLED components rose from $30.64 million to $259.18 million. Additionally, the export of mounted printed circuit boards surpassed $188 million, while transmission apparatus that include reception devices more than doubled to $62.14 million.

Exports in the automotive sector have also shown significant momentum. Motor car exports increased from $77.97 million to $701.78 million, while scooter exports experienced a growth of more than threefold, reaching $14.51 million. Notably, exports of railway maintenance and service vehicles tripled to $43.12 million. These developments illustrate the expanding capabilities of India’s automotive manufacturing.

The engineering and capital goods sectors showed healthy growth as well. Dredger exports escalated from $158.88 million to $596.34 million, and sales of industrial robots more than tripled to $6.18 million. Equipment used for liquefying air and gases also witnessed significant growth, totalling $248.53 million. Various categories, including mining and drilling equipment, crane lorries, and profile-forming machines, have demonstrated strong performance.

Significant Changes in Agricultural and Food Exports

Diversification is also evident in agricultural and food exports, with wheat exports skyrocketing over sevenfold to reach $10.23 million. Exports of quinoa more than doubled, and coffee-based preparations saw an increase of more than four times. The export of black tea also more than doubled within the same period. Furthermore, several other food items such as sardines, shrimp, citrus fruits, and shallots displayed triple-digit growth.

The data suggests a gradual evolution of India’s manufacturing ecosystem, moving away from traditional export staples such as petroleum and gems towards sectors like electronics, specialised engineering products, and high-value industrial goods. This shift reflects the growing involvement of Indian manufacturers in global value chains, particularly those associated with electronics and industrial machinery, driving the potential for continued export growth.
