Britain, France and Germany Warn China Over Taiwan Strait Moves

The CSR Journal Magazine

Britain, France, and Germany have issued a rare joint statement expressing concern over Chinese military activities in the Taiwan Strait. This announcement, made on Wednesday, highlights rising apprehensions regarding regional stability amid increased pressure exerted by China around Taiwan. The three nations specifically noted that these actions pose a significant threat to stability in the region.

Chinese Military Actions Around Taiwan

The joint statement coincided with China dispatching its newest and most advanced aircraft carrier through the Taiwan Strait. This manoeuvre occurred shortly after Taiwan commenced a five-day military exercise aimed at enhancing its readiness amidst the possibility of a Chinese offensive. Taiwanese officials indicated that the drills are focused on improving their response capabilities, particularly in relation to potential escalation from China.

In addition, the de-facto embassies of the three European nations in Taipei expressed their concerns regarding “novel Chinese activity,” which remained unspecified in their declaration. Earlier in the month, China had engaged in a series of coast guard patrols, labelling these operations as undertakings for maritime traffic enforcement and hydrographic surveys. Reports suggest that China’s recent military assertiveness serves as a warning to Japan and the Philippines, particularly following discussions between the two nations regarding maritime boundaries in contested waters.

The statement from Britain, France, and Germany emphasised that such actions endanger regional stability as well as the freedoms associated with international shipping. The countries reiterated their stance against any unilateral modifications to the current status quo, especially if these changes involve threats or coercive tactics. Furthermore, they underscored the importance of navigational rights and the safety of all maritime personnel.

Continued Tensions in the Taiwan Strait

China’s Foreign Ministry has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the joint statement from Europe. Over recent years, Beijing has intensified its pressure on Taiwan through regular military incursions involving vessels and aircraft around the island. Reports indicate that these incursions have become nearly daily occurrences, accompanied by live-fire drills on occasion.

The Defence Ministry of Taiwan has characterised Chinese “grey-zone tactics” as aggressive manoeuvres that include naval patrols and drone flights that do not escalate to direct combat. Furthermore, there have been reports of Chinese coast guard vessels engaging in harassment of commercial ships near Taiwan. These incidents involved the coast guard demanding that vessels disclose their intended routes, thereby illustrating the ongoing tensions in the area.

The evolving situation around Taiwan marks a significant increase in regional tensions. European nations are voicing their concerns, aligning their positions amidst China’s continuous military presence around the island. Taiwan, in response, is actively conducting exercises to bolster its defence readiness, seeking to ensure its military is prepared for any potential challenges that may arise.
