BMC Launches ‘Vruksha Sanjivani Abhiyan 2.0’ to Rejuvenate Mumbai’s Urban Green Cover

The BMC has made a significant move towards enhancing and preserving Mumbai’s urban tree cover. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched the second phase of its tree conservation campaign titled ‘Vruksha Sanjivani Abhiyan 2.0’. This initiative will run from April 15 to April 30, 2025. It aims to give a new lease of life to roadside trees across Mumbai.

A Mission to Revive the City’s Trees

The ‘Vruksha Sanjivani Abhiyan 2.0’ campaign will focus on the holistic health and maintenance of existing trees across Mumbai.

It includes measures such as:

  1. Removal of nails, wires, banners, and posters attached to trees

  2. Clearing of concrete around tree roots to allow proper growth

  3. Restoring trees impacted by urban infrastructure

This ‘Vruksha Sanjivani Abhiyan 2.0’ is a green initiative being implemented under the directives of various great leaders. It includes BMC Commissioner and Administrator Mr. Bhushan Gagrani, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr. Amit Saini. The initiative will run into action under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner (Gardens) Mr. Ajit Ambi.

Building on Past Success

The first ‘Vruksha Sanjivani Abhiyan’ was launched in 2022. The initiative did so well that it received strong public and institutional support. Following the success of the first phase, BMC has now initiated this second phase to expand and intensify its efforts to protect the trees across Mumbai. This initiative will make sure that Mumbai reaches a step forward to greenery.

Well-Coordinated Execution

Meanwhile, in order to ensure effective implementation, the BMC’s Gardens Department has deployed well-equipped teams in all administrative wards. All these deployed teams are supported with manpower, tools, and materials required. They will systematically work on trees lining city roads.

The ‘Vruksha Sanjivani Abhiyan’ campaign is being conducted in coordination with departments such as the Protection, Permissions, Electrical, and Roads divisions. The involvement of all the departments will avoid obstacles and streamline the execution process.

Citizens Called to Action

Along with all the departments, BMC has appealed to all citizens, environmental enthusiasts, NGOs, students, and interested volunteers to actively participate in the campaign. Their involvement in the campaign will mark as a crucial step in protecting Mumbai’s green legacy and enhancing urban biodiversity.

A People’s Movement for Green Mumbai

On behalf of the BMC administration, Superintendent of Gardens Mr. Jitendra Pardeshi spoke on the ‘Vruksha Sanjivani Abhiyan 2.0’ . He stated that the campaign is not just a symbolic cleanliness drive but also a grassroots movement. It is powered by public participation to rejuvenate the city’s trees, he said.
