Bloom Avenue Project Introduced as Year-Round Flower Corridor in Bengaluru

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bloom Avenue project, aimed at creating a year-round flower corridor in Bengaluru’s Kempegowda Layout, was officially inaugurated on June 27, 2024. This initiative was part of a larger plantation drive announced by the Karnataka government, seeking to establish a Guinness World Record by recruiting over 50,000 volunteers to plant 1.5 million saplings across the city.

UnboxingBLR, a non-profit organisation focused on urban development, joined the government’s efforts with its own contribution of over 6,000 saplings along an 8-kilometre stretch of the Major Arterial Road connecting Mysuru Road and Magadi Road. The project strategically prioritises native flowering species, ensuring that the corridor remains vibrant throughout the year.

This recruitment drive reflects a strong commitment to the enhancement of Bengaluru’s green heritage, contributing to the city’s identity as a significant urban centre known for its lush greenery. It underscores the importance of collaborative efforts from citizens, governmental bodies, and non-profits in addressing environmental concerns.

Historical Context and Urban Greenery Legacy

Bengaluru’s reputation as the Garden City of India is not merely coincidental but a result of historical initiatives in urban landscaping. Key figures in the city’s green legacy include landscape architect Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel, whose efforts in the early 1900s established many of the city’s parks and avenues. This legacy was further expanded during the 1980s by S. G. Neginhal, a former Deputy Conservator of Forests, who significantly augmented Bengaluru’s tree cover.

Unlike previous projects, Bloom Avenue is designed to offer continuous aesthetic appeal, inspired by the city’s rich botanical traditions. UBLR intends to continue this legacy by re-establishing greenery in urban corridors, particularly in areas facing urbanisation pressures. The initiative aims to engage residents with their environment while enhancing the city’s visual landscape.

This project is part of a deliberate effort to plant flowering species that are sequenced by colour to ensure continuous blooming throughout the year. UBLR’s approach carefully balances ecological integrity and visual appeal, making it a notable initiative aimed at boosting the city’s natural environment once the saplings mature.

Collaboration and Maintenance of the Project

Bloom Avenue is being executed in collaboration with the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), which is responsible for supplying the flower saplings through its Forest Division. UnboxingBLR has taken on the financial and operational aspects of the initiative, including the actual planting process.

The project has been structured into eight one-kilometre sections, each uniquely designed with a specific colour pairing to ensure at least one section is vibrant with blooms at all times. Moreover, indigenous species have been prioritised, ensuring they are well-suited to the local climate. Non-native species included in the project are those with historical connections to Bengaluru’s botanical history.

The commitment to maintain the planted saplings spans three years, which involves regular watering, monitoring, and replacement of any failed plants to meet BDA standards. As part of the second phase, future planting will extend to adjacent service roads while maintaining the initial plantings.

Community engagement has been significant in this endeavour, paving the way for other projects aimed at improving urban greenery. The collaborative nature of Bloom Avenue serves as a model for civic partnerships aimed at transformative urban development, illustrating the potential for citizen-led initiatives in revitalising urban environments.
