BJP Submits Memorandum to Himachal Governor Against IGMC Shift of Kamla Nehru Hospital Services

The CSR Journal Magazine

A delegation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) met with Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta at the Raj Bhavan in Shimla on April 14. The party submitted a memorandum opposing the state government’s recent decisions, which they characterized as detrimental to the public and impractical. Key figures in the delegation included State General Secretary Sanjeev Katwal, Media Convenor Karan Nanda, Treasurer Kamal Sood, Co-Media In-charge Rama Thakur, and Pyar Singh Kanwar.

The BJP raised alarms regarding the proposed transfer of gynaecology services from Kamla Nehru Hospital to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC). They argued that this relocation could negatively affect maternal and neonatal healthcare in the region. Kamla Nehru Hospital has been a significant healthcare resource for women and newborns, operating for nearly a century.

According to the BJP, the transition is being implemented through what they referred to as a “silent shifting” strategy, lacking formal notification and adequate planning. They noted that IGMC is already functioning over its capacity, asserting that merging services with a 300-bed specialised facility could jeopardise healthcare delivery and patient safety.

Significant Concerns Over Investment and Hospital Utility

The memorandum detailed that over Rs 20 crore of public funds had been invested in upgrading Kamla Nehru Hospital, which may become ineffective under the current governmental plans. The BJP also expressed concerns about potential alternative uses for the hospital land, calling for a transparent inquiry into the situation.

Furthermore, the delegation lodged strong objections to the proposed increase in fees for passes on restricted and regulated roads within Shimla city. They reported that the revised processing fee would rise from Rs 100 to Rs 500, and the pass fee would jump from Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000. The BJP argued that such increases impose a substantial financial burden on residents, traders, and employees alike.

The party described this move as “arbitrary and revenue-driven,” suggesting that it would cause unnecessary hardship and foster public resentment. They also reprimanded the introduction of stringent penal measures, including heavy fines and potential imprisonment, labelling them as disproportionate and inconsistent with democratic principles.

BJP Calls for Action and Announces Continued Agitation

The BJP urged the Governor to take note of these pressing issues and to direct the state government to retain the current services at Kamla Nehru Hospital while retracting the proposed increase in pass fees. The delegation concluded by asserting that the party would ramp up its efforts against what they perceived as anti-people decisions made by the state government.

The BJP’s actions illustrate their commitment to representing the concerns of the public, particularly in relation to healthcare and financial policies. As they prepare to intensify their agitation, the issue is likely to remain at the forefront of political discussions within the state.

As the situation develops, community responses will be significant in shaping how healthcare services and local governance are addressed in Himachal Pradesh. The BJP’s interventions reflect a broader organisational strategy aimed at holding the state government accountable for its decisions regarding public welfare.
