BJP Replaces Bankipur Bypoll Candidate Just a Day After Announcement

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a significant adjustment to its candidate list for the upcoming Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar, replacing Abhishek “Bunty” with Neeraj Kumar Sinha just one day after nominations were filed. Bunty had submitted his candidature on Thursday, 9 July 2026, in the presence of key leaders from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). His nomination process involved seeking blessings from his family, following which a public meeting was held that saw attendance from prominent Bihar officials, including Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.

However, on the evening of 10 July, Bunty met with the state BJP president, Sanjay Saraogi, to discuss his candidacy. Following this meeting, Bunty announced his decision to withdraw from the race, citing “family reasons.” He did not provide further details regarding his withdrawal and later addressed the media to clarify his position.

Introduction of New Candidate

Following Bunty’s withdrawal, the BJP quickly named Neeraj Kumar Sinha as its new candidate for the Bankipur by-poll. Samrat Choudhary publicly congratulated Sinha and extended his best wishes for the electoral contest. Sinha, a resident of Patna, has been affiliated with the BJP for nearly twenty years, having joined the party as a primary member in 2006.

Throughout his political career, Sinha has taken on various roles within the organisation, serving as booth president, Mandal general secretary, and district vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). Currently, he is in his second consecutive term as president of the Narendra Bharti Mandal, showcasing a strong commitment to the party.

Sinha’s background is notable, as he comes from a family with historical connections to the party’s ideological forerunners. His uncle, the late Narendra Bharti, was actively involved in the Jan Sangh, leading to the local BJP unit being named in his honour. This lineage may enhance Sinha’s appeal to the party’s base, as he embodies longstanding party values.

Political Reactions to Candidate Change

The abrupt change in candidature has spurred criticism from opposition parties, particularly the Congress. Spokesperson Rajesh Rathore suggested that the BJP’s decision to substitute its nominee was a response to anticipated challenges in securing victory within the Bankipur constituency. This reflects a broader apprehension surrounding the electoral climate in the area.

The BJP has yet to provide a comprehensive rationale for the sudden alteration in their candidate, aside from Bunty’s claim regarding family reasons. Political analysts and local observers have indicated that the by-election is expected to be closely contested, with heightened campaigning from various significant parties in the region.

As the Bankipur by-election approaches, all major political factions are intensifying their efforts to sway voters, demonstrating the heightened stakes involved. The changed candidate dynamics will likely become a focal point in the coming days as the election date nears, keeping all interested parties on high alert.
