Ravi Shankar Prasad, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressed his confidence in the party’s prospects during the Bankipur Assembly by-election, stating that a significant victory is anticipated. Following the casting of his vote, he highlighted the development initiatives undertaken in the Bankipur constituency and throughout Patna.

Prasad reflected on his long-standing connection to local politics, mentioning his previous support for Nitin Nabin, a former candidate in the region and current MP for Patna Sahib. He noted the affection people have for Nabin and the developmental progress that residents have witnessed over the years.

He concluded that the BJP’s accomplishments in the region will translate into a broad endorsement from the electorate, stressing that the public is aware of the candidates they wish to support.

Encouragement for Voter Participation

Maya Shankar, Prasad’s spouse, used the occasion to urge fellow citizens to engage actively in the electoral process. She emphasised the importance of voting as a fundamental right, encouraging individuals to exercise their franchise irrespective of party affiliations.

Maya Shankar underscored the necessity of participating in democracy, stating that everyone has the freedom to vote for their preferred candidate. Her remarks were aimed at fostering a culture of civic engagement and highlighting the value of voter turnout.

Meanwhile, Aditya Shankar Prasad, the couple’s son, advocated for voters to recognise the transformative development that Patna has experienced over the years, contrasting the modern city with the conditions of previous decades. He remarked on the significance of each vote in shaping government outcomes.

Allegations of Intimidation and Irregularities

As the voting process continued under strict security, Ashok Choudhary, a Bihar government minister, along with his wife, participated in casting their votes, declaring their commitment to their political ideology. Choudhary asserted that he foresaw no competitive tensions in the Bankipur constituency.

However, Prashant Kishore, the founder of the Jan Suraaj party and a candidate in the election, alleged that the police were exerting undue pressure on voters to favour the BJP. He claimed that police actions were systematically targeting individuals affiliated with his party.

Kishore raised concerns over voter intimidation at several polling stations, asserting that police operations had persisted since the prior evening, leading to numerous arrests of Jan Suraaj supporters. He encouraged the public to remain undeterred and come out to vote, stating that the police’s tactics would not diminish the electorate’s resolve.

The Bankipur by-election was prompted by the resignation of Nitin Nabin, who vacated his seat after being elected to the Rajya Sabha. The BJP has nominated Neeraj Kumar Sinha as their candidate, whereas Kishore represents the Jan Suraaj party. Vote counting is scheduled to take place on August 3, following the electoral process.
