Datia Assembly Bypoll Sees BJP’s Narottam Mishra Casting Vote

The CSR Journal Magazine

In the Datia Assembly by-election held on July 30, BJP leader Narottam Mishra cast his vote, articulating the party’s commitment to winning the seat and fostering development in the region. After voting, he told reporters, “The intention is for the Bharatiya Janata Party to win and for Datia to see development; that is why the ‘Lotus’ button was pressed.”

Mishra expressed optimism regarding voter turnout, asserting that the electorate would support the BJP’s development initiatives. He described the Congress party’s allegations about the BJP’s presence in the area as indicative of their “desperation and despondency.”

Addressing reporters, Mishra remarked, “This statement reflects the Congress party’s desperation and despondency. Whenever they lose, they invariably level some allegation or another. The public will vote in favour of the BJP and the development work it has undertaken.”

Reaction to Allegations and Emotional Remarks

When asked about his emotional reaction to the injuries sustained by BJP workers, Mishra clarified that his feelings were unrelated to any electoral defeat. He stated, “I became emotional over the injuries sustained by my party workers, not because of the defeat. I haven’t even lost an election; my ticket was cancelled. Where does the issue of defeat come in when I was emotional about something else?”

Mishra’s remarks suggest that his focus remains on the well-being of his party members rather than electoral outcomes. He aimed to reassure his supporters that their collective efforts would yield positive results in the election.

His candid statement comes amid a politically charged environment, where allegations and counterclaims have characterised the ongoing electoral contest.

Polling Process and Incident Reports

According to Datia Collector Swapnil Vankhede, the polling process began smoothly across the constituency, with no serious incidents reported. Vankhede confirmed, “Today, on July 30, peaceful voting began at 7 AM across all places, and peace is being maintained everywhere. No incidents have been reported from anywhere.”

Despite the overall tranquillity, there were reports of technical issues with voting machines at three locations, which were rectified promptly. Vankhede explained, “At some places, one had a faulty CU, one had a faulty BU, and one had a faulty VVPAT, which had to be replaced. It was replaced under CCTV surveillance and with the signatures of agents from all political parties. Voting is ongoing at all places.”

The counting of votes for the Datia Assembly by-election is scheduled for August 3. This electoral contest arose following the disqualification of Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti on April 2, under the provisions of Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and Article 191(1)(e) of the Constitution.

Candidates and Broader Electoral Context

In this by-election, the BJP has nominated Ashutosh Tiwari to contest for the Datia seat, while the Congress has put forth Ghanshyam Singh as its candidate. Tiwari replaces Narottam Mishra, who previously held the Datia seat for three consecutive terms from 2008 to 2018 before losing it in the 2023 Assembly elections.

In a related political landscape, voting for the Manjalpur Assembly by-election in Gujarat is also underway. BJP leader Jay Prakash Soni cast his vote in Vadodara, while Congress candidate Bhikhabhai Rabari urged voters to participate actively in the electoral process. Rabari encouraged all eligible voters to exercise their right, saying, “In a democracy, voting is a right for all of us. I also appeal to the public to turn out in large numbers to vote. Vote for whomever you wish, but do cast your vote.”

The Manjalpur seat was vacated following the demise of sitting BJP MLA Yogeshbhai Narandas Patel, highlighting the dynamic nature of the electoral atmosphere in various regions of India.
