BJP plans a Meitei Chief Minister, Kuki Deputy CM, appoints Tarun Chugh as observer in Manipur

The CSR Journal Magazine

After a long period of violence, the North-eastern state of Manipur is finally somewhat calm. In this situation, the BJP-led NDA is preparing to quickly form a government over there following end of the President’s rule in the state on February 12.

Manipur’s NDA MLAs visited Delhi on Monday on an urgent call. BJP’s All India General Secretary Tarun Chugh was appointed as the observer for Manipur in the same meeting to choose the legislative party leader. The move has fuelled speculation over the possible formation of a popularly elected government in the North-eastern state, which is currently under President’s Rule.

Along with this, according to party sources, the initial calculations for forming a government in Manipur have also been completed. According to the BJP’s plan, someone from the Meitei community may be made the Chief Minister of Manipur while someone from the Kuki community may be made the Deputy Chief Minister in a well-planned strategy to appease both the clashing communities and maintain peace in the state.

Manipur burning since 2023

Manipur has been burning in the fire of terrible violence since 2023. More than 300 people have died while millions have been displaced. The North-eastern state is now somewhat calm after prolonged clash between the Meitei and Kuki communities. As a result, to prevent new violence in Manipur, if the government is formed, the BJP’s plan is to choose a Chief Minister from the Metei community and a Deputy Chief Minister from the Kuki community.

Several names are emerging as the Chief Ministerial candidate. For example, the Assembly Speaker of Biren Singh’s government, Satyabrata Singh, former minister TH Biswajit Singh and K Govind Das. All of them are from the Metei community. On the other hand, the Deputy Chief Minister will be brought from the Kuki community.

Although the Kukis have already warned that they will not accept the government if they do not have enough representatives in the government. The central leadership is considering that demand of the Kukis. In addition, some MLAs have proposed to form Manipur as a Union Territory, which should also have its own Legislative Assembly.

President’s Rule ends in Manipur on February 12

It is worth noting that former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh failed to stop the violence in Manipur. The opposition repeatedly roared against him. In this situation, on the last day of 2024, the CM apologised to all the citizens of the state for the bloody violence in Manipur. Since then, his position has been shaky. Finally, under pressure, N. Biren Singh resigned from the post of Chief Minister on February 9 last year. Then, President’s rule was initially imposed in Manipur for six months. But later that period was extended. However, for now, the north-eastern state is somewhat calm.

The term of President’s rule there will end on February 12. According to sources, the term of President’s rule will not be extended further in Manipur. Meanwhile, the term of the last assembly government in Manipur was till 2027, so the MLAs are demanding that a government be formed there for at least one year.
The BJP-led NDA has been exploring options amid evolving political equations, though no official announcement has been made so far regarding government formation.
