Manipur Police and the Assam Rifles conducted a successful operation on August 24, 2026, resulting in the recovery of various firearms and ammunition. This operation took place in the foothills of Sinam Kom village, located under the Sagolmang Police Station in Imphal East district, as confirmed by the authorities. The search was initiated following reliable intelligence, corroborated by the 4 Mahar (Borders) unit.

A joint team consisting of the Chief of Defence (CDO) of Imphal East and the 28 Assam Rifles was responsible for executing this operation. The collaboration aimed to enhance security measures in the region and eliminate illicit arms from circulation. The successful recovery of weapons underlies the ongoing efforts to ensure peace and security in Manipur.

Among the items retrieved during the operation were a 7.62 Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) complete with a magazine, a 5.56 Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) rifle with two magazines, and a 9 mm pistol that also included a magazine. Additionally, security forces seized other firearms, including a Pompi gun and a country-made lethal gun, along with two single-barreled guns.

Details of Recovered Arms and Ammunition

The operation resulted in the recovery of three No. 36 hand grenades and one MG2 mortar shell. Security forces retrieved 45 rounds of assorted live ammunition, which adds to the arsenal targeted in the operation. Furthermore, four bulletproof plates, eight bulletproof jackets, and two helmets were also taken into custody. These items are believed to have been intended for use in illegal activities within the region.

This significant haul of weapons and ammunition not only demonstrates the commitment of both the Manipur Police and Assam Rifles to combat illegal arms activities but also contributes to the overarching goal of restoring peace in the area. In a related development, a separate operation took place on July 23, resulting in the apprehension of a high-ranking cadre from the United Kuki National Army (UKNA). This joint operation was executed by the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Police in Molnom village, located in the Churachandpur district. The individual captured was identified as S Palal Thadou, alias Lalboi Singson, a 45-year-old reportedly posing as the Finance Secretary for UKNA.

Authorities characterised him as a high-value target involved in extensive extortion activities and incidents of violence committed by the UKNA in the area. Following confirmation of his presence in the village, security forces swiftly cordoned off the location and made the arrest.

In addition to the apprehension, extortion notes and a mobile phone were confiscated from the suspect. This successful joint operation is expected to significantly contribute to ongoing peace efforts and stability in the region. The collaboration among security forces underscores the importance of strategic planning and effective execution in handling security threats in Manipur.
