The vigil followed a devastating announcement as the death toll rose to 734 by Sunday, with almost 2,500 individuals reported missing. These figures highlight the severity of the disaster, with rescue operations ongoing for the fifth consecutive day as teams searched affected areas.

Impact of the Flash Floods on Local Communities

The floods, occurring on Wednesday, have had catastrophic effects across several districts in Nepal. The disaster was reportedly triggered by an ice-rock avalanche resulting from a glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border. This incident led to torrents of water, mud, and debris sweeping through towns and villages, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and hydropower facilities.

Community members at the vigil were led by the Blue Diamond Society, which has been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in Nepal. In an act of solidarity, the Blue Diamond Society cancelled the 24th Nepal Pride Parade and GaiJatra Celebration, which were originally scheduled for August 29. In light of the floods and the challenges faced by communities, the organisation opted to change their plans to focus on remembrance rather than celebration.
