Adjustment in AC Temperature Results in Significant Savings on Electricity Bill: Here is What to do

Pooja, a content creator active on X under the handle @poojaofficial5, highlighted the impact that a minor alteration to air conditioner settings can have on electricity expenses. After changing the temperature of her AC from 22°C to 28°C, she reported a dramatic decrease in her monthly electricity bill from approximately Rs 3,500 to Rs 1,292, indicating a savings rate exceeding 60 per cent.

Details of the Temperature Adjustment

Initially, Pooja operated her air conditioner at 22°C over a period of two months, using it for about five to seven hours daily. Her average monthly bill during this duration was around Rs 3,500. Following her decision to reset the AC to 28°C, she maintained a similar usage pattern for an additional two months, which resulted in her monthly bill dropping to Rs 1,292.

This adjustment equated to savings of nearly Rs 2,208 each month. Importantly, Pooja noted that she did not acquire a new air conditioning unit or incur any substantial expenses related to her system. Her only change was the temperature setting.

She acknowledged that it took longer for the room to reach a comfortable temperature at 28°C, but she eventually found the environment agreeable.

Energy Efficiency Considerations

While Pooja’s results underscore a possible relationship between higher AC settings and energy savings, it is essential to note that her reported 60 per cent decrease has not been independently verified. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) supports the notion that increasing the air conditioning temperature can lead to reduced energy consumption. According to the BEE, for every 1°C rise in temperature, there is a potential savings of approximately 6 per cent on electricity costs.

The BEE advises consumers to set their AC units to around 24°C, indicating that doing so instead of maintaining a setting of 20°C can result in a reduction of around 24 per cent in electricity use. However, actual savings will vary significantly from person to person, depending on factors such as the efficiency of the air conditioner, the dimensions and insulation of the room, outside weather conditions, and the duration of AC usage.

Pooja herself has acknowledged that her experience with energy savings may not be universally applicable, emphasising that individuals’ results can vary widely based on their specific circumstances.

Additional Tips for Energy Saving

In addition to her findings on temperature adjustments, Pooja recommended that users frequently clean their air conditioner filters to help maintain efficiency. This maintenance practice can enhance the overall performance of the unit and contribute to ongoing energy conservation.

Her overarching message is straightforward: saving electricity does not always necessitate turning off the air conditioning system or investing in new appliances. She believes that, in many cases, a better approach involves smarter usage of existing units.

Pooja stated, “Sometimes, you do not need to switch off the AC to save electricity. You just need to use it a little smarter.” This perspective offers a practical alternative for those looking to reduce energy costs without compromising on comfort or convenience.
