Subhash Chandra Accuses Mukesh Ambani of Media Smear Campaign

The CSR Journal Magazine

Subhash Chandra, the chairman of Essel Group, has openly critiqued Mukesh Ambani, alleging that media outlets associated with Reliance Industries have been engaged in disseminating false information against him and his organisation. This statement emerged amid ongoing discussions surrounding his personal insolvency case and previous corporate conflicts regarding Zee Entertainment. Chandra’s remarks suggest that the media coverage aims to tarnish his reputation and financial standing.

In a recent video statement, Chandra directly addressed Ambani, questioning the portrayal of his personal insolvency proceedings. He highlighted that reports suggesting his debt amounted to Rs 22,006 crore misrepresented the actual circumstances, as these claims originated from personal guarantees he provided for loans taken by various Essel Group companies. He asserted that after complying with the National Company Law Tribunal’s (NCLT) directive, he currently holds no ownership in Zee.

Chandra specifically cited the coverage by Reliance-affiliated channels, claiming it inaccurately implied that he had personally incurred a debt of Rs 22,006 crore and subsequently negotiated a settlement of Rs 6.5 crore. He asserted that such elaborations are misleading and contribute to a negative narrative surrounding his financial situation. This accusation remains unverified by independent sources.

Background of Corporate Disputes

Chandra’s video statement extended beyond his personal financial struggles and revisited the contentious history between Zee Entertainment and Invesco, a significant stakeholder. Invesco’s attempts in 2021 to instigate changes within Zee’s management sparked a broader struggle that involved Reliance, with claims that the latter sought to gain control over Zee. Chandra expressed concerns that the motives behind these moves were detrimental to the interests of minority shareholders within Zee.

Reliance has acknowledged prior discussions regarding a potential fusion of its media assets with Zee. However, such talks ultimately did not culminate in any agreement. Chandra indicated that the plummeting share price of Zee might be correlated with entities linked to Ambani, although this assertion has not been independently confirmed.

Additionally, Chandra referenced a potential merger between Sony and Zee, which was finally proposed in 2021. But he later abandoned it in January 2024 due to unresolved disagreements over transaction conditions. The revival of these discussions by Chandra appears to be a strategic move, linking his current insolvency challenges to past corporate conflicts.

Reliance’s Response to Allegations

In light of Chandra’s assertions, Reliance Industries has categorically dismissed the claims against its media channels as unfounded. The organisation expressed its disappointment over Chandra’s remarks and firmly denied any allegations of using its media outlets to undermine any individual. Reliance stated its respect for Chandra as a businessman and entrepreneur, offering him their best wishes.

This response from Reliance underscores their position that no intentional targeting or negative portrayal of Chandra or Essel Group exists within their media brands. The company maintains that its entities remain committed to impartial reporting without malice towards any person or organisation.

Overall, this exchange brings to the forefront Chandra’s struggle with personal insolvency and the ensuing media portrayal. Meanwhile, it also rekindles discussions surrounding the historical corporate rivalry with Reliance and the failed merger attempts involving Zee. As Chandra draws links between these issues, the media landscape continues to reflect the complexities surrounding corporate relationships and public perceptions.
