Harmanpreet Singh has stated that following the disappointing conclusion to their World Cup campaign, India’s primary focus will now be on the upcoming Asian Games. After finishing in eighth place, following a heartbreaking shootout loss to Belgium, the team is determined to shift gears. India’s performance in the World Cup was lacklustre, with the team failing to secure victories against stronger opponents.

The Asian Games, scheduled for next month, will present an opportunity to defend India’s title. Last year, the team secured the Asia Cup with a commanding performance, instilling confidence as they prepare for the competitions ahead. A gold medal at these Games would also ensure India’s qualification for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028, making success a multifaceted goal.

In the aftermath of their World Cup exit, Singh remarked that both India and Belgium found themselves in a position they were reluctant to occupy – fighting for seventh and eighth place. However, the captain indicated that the exposure gained from performing against one of the world’s elite teams and in front of their supporters would serve as a confidence booster for his squad.

Despite the disappointment of their World Cup finish, Harmanpreet expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance against Belgium, stating that they demonstrated the qualities of teamwork over the entire match duration. He highlighted the importance of maintaining good performance across all aspects of play. “We are pleased with the overall performance against Belgium, although the eighth-place finish does not meet our expectations,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Singh outlined that the team’s immediate aim is the Asian Games, where they aspire to clinch the gold medal. This ambition aligns with broader aspirations of making it to the Los Angeles Olympics. The captain emphasised the significance of winning, noting that victory is a collective achievement, with losses being a shared responsibility among teammates.

Harmanpreet acknowledged the lessons learned during the World Cup regarding team defence. Although pleased with certain aspects of their play, the team will need to address its defensive vulnerabilities ahead of the Asian Games. He pointed out that strong defensive capabilities are crucial, as lapses in defence can expose the team to challenges from stronger sides.

Defensive Improvements Needed for Future Success

The Indian hockey team’s defence came under scrutiny during the World Cup, having conceded a total of 19 goals, which placed them among the more vulnerable teams in the tournament. This has raised concerns about the team’s defensive strategies and their effectiveness against higher-calibre opponents.

Harmanpreet underlined the necessity for improvement in this aspect, stating that the team must work collectively on its defensive strategies. He mentioned that failures in defence can lead to significant trouble when facing more established teams. “If we do not defend well as a unit, we will inevitably face difficulties against stronger sides,” he noted, emphasising the need for a cohesive defensive approach.

As the Asian Games approach, the Indian team is set to begin their campaign against Indonesia on September 20. With high stakes ahead, the team’s focus will be on consolidating their strengths while rectifying previous shortcomings in both defence and overall teamwork. The upcoming Games serve not just as a platform for proving their mettle, but also as a critical pathway towards Olympic qualification.
