The announcement of Suvendu Adhikari as the Leader of the BJP Legislature Party in West Bengal has generated a wave of optimism among party leaders. Following the BJP’s victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, Adhikari is set to take the oath as the new Chief Minister. This development has been met with enthusiasm from various quarters within the party, highlighting a collective belief in Adhikari’s potential to lead the state.

Confidence in Adhikari’s Leadership

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar expressed his confidence in Adhikari’s ability to steer West Bengal towards becoming “Sonar Bangla,” a term used to describe an ideal or prosperous Bengal. Majumdar stated, “I am very happy. Under the leadership of Suvendu da, we will turn Bengal into ‘Sonar Bangla’. This achievement is the result of everyone’s contribution,” reflecting a strong sense of unity and purpose within the party.

BJP leader Agnimitra Paul lauded Adhikari as a highly suitable choice for the Chief Minister’s position. Paul mentioned that Adhikari has demonstrated unwavering determination over the last five years, both inside and outside the Assembly. “We are extremely happy that Suvendu Adhikari has been unanimously elected by 207 BJP MLAs. He is the most suitable choice … All 207 MLAs have to work round the clock,” Paul remarked, emphasising the urgency of their agenda for the coming term.

Another BJP MLA-elect, Bankim Chandra Ghosh, congratulated Adhikari and expressed optimism regarding the future of the state. Ghosh stated, “We are very happy that Suvendu Adhikari has been chosen as Chief Minister. Bengal will progress under his leadership. What Mamata Banerjee could not do in 15 years, we will do in five years,” indicating a clear ambition to implement significant changes in governance.

Party Leaders Celebrate Electoral Victory

Mangal Pandey, the BJP in-charge, conveyed his satisfaction with the party’s electoral success, stating, “Today all the workers of the BJP are happy that the people here have done the work of blooming the lotus flower of the BJP on the land of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.” This metaphor illustrates the party’s aspiration to expand its influence in the region further.

BJP MLA-elect Umesh Rai remarked on the historical significance of the party’s triumph, characterising it as a fulfillment of a longstanding aspiration for the BJP in West Bengal. “For the first time, with the blessings of the people of Bengal, a true tribute has been paid to Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Bengali achievement is no ordinary victory; it is the fulfilment of the BJP’s dream,” Rai stated, reinforcing the narrative of a monumental shift in the political landscape of West Bengal.

Adhikari’s swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Ahead of the ceremony, he has engaged in discussions with Union Minister Amit Shah in Kolkata and met with newly elected BJP MLAs and senior party leaders to strategise for the formation of the new government.
