Bengaluru Prepared For DKS Oath-Taking Ceremony

The CSR Journal Magazine

The city of Bengaluru is set to host an elaborate swearing-in ceremony for Karnataka Chief Minister-designate DK Shivakumar, with significant security protocols established ahead of the event. Scheduled for 4.05 pm on June 3, this occasion marks an important leadership change within the Congress government. The city’s police are coordinating arrangements to facilitate the movement of political leaders, dignitaries, and a large number of supporters expected to attend.

In the interest of security, Bengaluru Police have segmented the arrangements into two primary zones. Zone 1 encompasses the Lokabhavan venue and has further been divided into five sectors, while Zone 2 covers peripheral areas and VIP transit routes, designated with eight sectors. The main entrance to Lokabhavan will serve as a high-security checkpoint for VVIPs, VIPs, and officially invited guests.

Additionally, arrangements are in place for the oath-taking ceremony itself, with a designated stage prepared for the occasion. Access will be limited to the Chief Minister-designate, ministers, Governors, and select dignitaries. Separate areas have also been arranged for VVIPs, VIPs, special invitees, and media personnel to ensure smooth proceedings.

Public Participation and Special Events

The ceremony will accommodate around 1,000 members of the public in Lawn-B, where live feeds of the oath-taking will be streamed via large LED screens. Following the formalities, a high-tea gathering for the Chief Minister, the new Council of Ministers, and invited dignitaries will occur at the Lokabhavan Banquet Hall. Security personnel will monitor food distribution points and entry and exit gates within the venue to maintain order.

Another significant event planned for the day is an open-jeep procession for Shivakumar from Lokabhavan to Vidhana Soudha. Authorities have implemented special security measures along this route to ensure a smooth passage. Police are enforcing a ban on traffic during the procession and preventing unauthorised individuals from approaching the Chief Minister’s convoy.

Screening points and barricades have been strategically established at Lokabhavan, Ambedkar Veedhi, and Vidhana Soudha to facilitate the process. Emergency response teams, including anti-protest units and reserve squads, will be on standby throughout the day, guided by senior officials from various branches of law enforcement to ensure public safety during the events.

Leadership Transition in Congress

Despite the extensive security preparations, Shivakumar has indicated that the swearing-in ceremony will remain a low-key event in order to limit inconvenience to the residents of Bengaluru. Reports suggest that more than 17,000 vehicles have been arranged by Congress workers and supporters from across the state to converge on the city for the ceremony, raising concerns regarding potential traffic congestion.

The upcoming swearing-in follows a series of political changes in Karnataka. Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah officially resigned on May 28 after months of speculation regarding a leadership change. This transition was conducted after consultations with the Congress high command, aiming to refresh leadership within the government’s term.

On June 2, the Congress Legislature Party unanimously elected Shivakumar as its leader during a meeting in Bengaluru, with Siddaramaiah nominating him and senior leader G Parameshwara seconding his appointment. Following this election, Shivakumar engaged with Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to formally lay claim to form the new government. The composition of the forthcoming Cabinet is under discussion, involving consultations between Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah, and other Congress leaders in New Delhi, aiming for a balanced mix of experienced and new members.
