In a major administrative overhaul following the change in state leadership, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has officially reopened the investigation into the RG Kar Medical College case. Fulfilling a key campaign promise, the new BJP administration has suspended three high-ranking IPS officers: *Vineet Goyal, Indira Mukherjee, and Abhishek Gupta.*
The suspensions are tied to allegations regarding the mishandling of the case and an alleged attempt to offer money to the victim’s family to ensure their silence.
“No One is Above Investigation”
During a press conference held on Friday afternoon, CM Adhikari emphasized that the probe would be thorough and uncompromising. He suggested that the investigation would extend to the role of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
“We will scrutinize call records and WhatsApp chats to identify who was communicating with these officers at the time,” Adhikari stated. “An inquiry will be conducted to determine if there were specific instructions from the former Chief Minister. We are going to bring everything to light.”
Adhikari specifically criticized the conduct of a former Deputy Commissioner (DC) during earlier press briefings, noting that the officer appeared to be acting beyond his official mandate. “It wasn’t pleasant for our state to see a DC speaking in that manner. He wasn’t the designated spokesperson for the Police or Home Department. We will find out who gave him the verbal authority to speak to the media.”
Victim’s Mother Recalls “Atmosphere of Fear”
The victim’s mother expressed a sense of relief following the state’s decisive action, revealing the intense pressure her family faced during the initial investigation.
Alleged Coercion: She claimed the family was intimidated to prevent them from speaking out about the money offered to them.
A Mother’s Resolve: “I was told not to mention the money. Even my husband was hesitant because he was afraid, but I had to speak up. If I hadn’t, this truth might have been buried for years,” she said.
Accountability: She directly blamed the previous administration for the lapse in security that led to the tragedy, thanking the new Chief Minister for prioritizing the file.
