Bengal Government Reopens Files in RG Kar Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The West Bengal Health Department has taken the notable step of reopening files related to the RG Kar case. Dr. Sharadwat Mukherjee, the newly appointed Health Minister, held a meeting to initiate a fresh review concerning the investigation into the tragic rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This decision highlights the government’s commitment to addressing longstanding concerns regarding the case.

On June 12, 2026, Mukherjee met with the parents of the victim for nearly one and a half hours to discuss their concerns about the investigation’s progress and the perceived shortcomings in handling the case. Minister Mukherjee was keen to understand the details of the investigation and identify any potential shortcomings that may have affected the probe.

After this dialogue, he convened another meeting with senior officials from the Health Department to meticulously examine existing records and findings related to the case. Mukherjee expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of the investigation, stating, “This matter is very close to our hearts. We have been fighting for justice for nearly one and a half years, yet we are not satisfied with the outcome so far.”

Allegations of Evidence Destruction

The minister raised serious allegations regarding the systematic destruction of evidence and information associated with the RG Kar case. He indicated that the department intends to investigate who was responsible for this alleged destruction, as well as any individuals who may have facilitated such actions. Mukherjee hinted at the possibility of a larger network being involved in the irregularities surrounding the investigation.

He communicated that all available documents, records, and evidence would be compiled and shared with various investigating agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), for thorough scrutiny. “We have reviewed everything that is currently available and will place the material before the investigating agencies,” Mukherjee stated, while choosing not to elaborate on specific details due to the ongoing legal proceedings.

The Background of the RG Kar Case

The RG Kar case originates from an incident that occurred in August 2024, when the body of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in a seminar hall within the emergency building of the government-run RG Kar Medical College. The victim, a second-year postgraduate student, was found unconscious and subsequently declared dead. Reports from the hospital noted injury marks on her body, prompting the police to register a murder case.

This incident incited widespread outrage throughout West Bengal, leading to months of demonstrations by doctors, medical students, and civil society organisations, all demanding justice and enhanced safety measures for healthcare workers. In response, the Kolkata Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprised of homicide experts and officers from the Detective Department to delve into the matter.

However, the investigation soon became embroiled in political controversy, with BJP leader Amit Malviya accusing the then government, led by Mamata Banerjee, of attempting to obscure fundamental facts concerning the case. Medical students from RG Kar Medical College also organised candlelight vigils, calling for a transparent investigation into the tragic events.

The reopening of the case files comes amidst ongoing demands from the victim’s family and various organisations for accountability and a thorough examination of the alleged evidence destruction and the overall handling of the case.
