Banned NCERT Class 8 Textbook Set For June Return After Judiciary Chapter Rewrite

The CSR Journal Magazine

Four months after its ban, the NCERT’s controversial Class 8 Social Science textbook is preparing to make a comeback. The revised edition, titled “Exploring Society: India and Beyond,” is expected to re-enter schools by the third week of June. This development follows a Supreme Court order issued in February, which mandated the withdrawal of the original textbook due to contentious content regarding judicial corruption.

Supreme Court Bans Textbook Over Controversial Content

The educational resource faced scrutiny after Chapter 4 addressed judicial corruption and the overwhelming backlog of court cases in India. This chapter drew significant criticism, prompting the Supreme Court to order the immediate removal of all physical and digital copies from circulation. In response, the NCERT apologised for what it termed an “error in judgement,” indicating that the contentious material would be thoroughly reviewed.

To address these issues, an expert review committee was formed to recommend necessary changes. The committee has since reportedly removed all references to judicial corruption from the new edition, aiming to ensure the textbook aligns with educational standards while avoiding further controversy.

The initial ban also had repercussions for three academics involved in the textbook’s development: renowned educator Michel Danino, educator Suparna Diwakar, and legal expert Alok Prasanna Kumar. The Supreme Court’s March directive prohibited these individuals from engaging in publicly funded educational activities. However, this direction was later recalled in May, allowing the experts to return to their roles.

Textbook Set For Release Amidst Ongoing Academic Session

The updated version of “Exploring Society: India and Beyond” has reportedly passed internal approvals and is currently in the printing phase. This timing is particularly important as schools across India are now launching their new academic sessions. Prior to the ban, only 38 of the original 2.25 lakh copies had been sold, indicating a pressing need for access to educational materials.

Many schools had begun the academic year without available copies of the textbook, creating a gap in the curriculum. The reissue is anticipated to meet demand as students and educators alike seek to integrate the revised content into their learning frameworks.

The return of this book represents a significant moment in the ongoing dialogue surrounding educational materials in India. The steps taken to amend the textbook reflect broader efforts to align curriculum with appropriate educational standards while addressing concerns about sensitive topics.

Impact of Controversy on Educational Material

The situation has raised questions regarding the impact of controversies on educational resources and the freedom of academic discourse. With the revised edition set to circulate, stakeholders in education will be watching how this case influences future curriculum development and the incorporation of sensitive subjects into textbooks.

As the third week of June approaches, many will look to see how the updated textbook is received by students and educators, and if it will facilitate constructive discussions surrounding the judiciary and other critical issues in society.
