Australian Couple Finds Live Frog in Woolworths Lettuce, Sparking Store Investigation

The CSR Journal Magazine

An Australian couple experienced an unexpected surprise when they found a live frog nestled within a bag of lettuce purchased from a Woolworths supermarket. This incident, which has drawn attention and amusement, subsequently initiated an investigation into how the amphibian managed to find its way into the package. The story was initially reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

The couple, Laura Jones and her partner, found the frog after returning home with their groceries from a Woolworths location in Esperance, Western Australia. Jones narrated to the ABC that the tiny creature needed some time to adapt after its unusual travel experience, suggesting it had likely travelled from the store to their residence.

After taking the time to help the frog recover, Jones stated that they eventually released it alongside the remaining lettuce. The couple affectionately named the frog “Greg.” They chose a local dam near their home for the release, where the frog quickly appeared to resume its natural behaviour.

Reactions and Reminders

Mr. Le Pine, Jones’s partner, described the surprise as one of the most unexpected experiences he had encountered while opening a bag of lettuce. He expressed relief that the frog returned safely to its natural habitat. The couple’s account resonated with humour, highlighting the unusual nature of the incident.

In light of the discovery, a spokesperson from Western Australia’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development emphasised the importance of reporting any insects, plants, or animals found in packaged goods. They specifically noted that produce, especially those that may have crossed state borders or come from overseas, should be reported if such incidents arise.

Woolworths has confirmed that it is actively investigating the matter with suppliers as a priority. The supermarket chain reassured customers that they take food safety and product quality seriously. Woolworths clarified that rigorous inspection procedures are implemented before any produce is packaged and distributed to stores, including multiple quality checks and inspections for foreign materials.

Context and Expert Insights

This is not the first incidence of an animal being found within packaged produce from Woolworths. In 2016, a shopper discovered a large spider in a pre-packaged Italian salad mix sold by the retailer, which gained viral attention at the time. Such occurrences, while unusual, are not entirely foreign to customers.

Experts in amphibians have noted that frogs can sometimes be found as unintentional “hitchhikers” in produce, a phenomenon that is particularly common in Australia. Dr. Jodi Rowley from the Australian Museum Research Institute explained that frogs are known to latch onto bananas and other types of produce during transportation from Queensland to southern states.

Dr. Rowley further highlighted that the presence of frogs in produce should not be perceived as a negative sign. Instead, it may indicate that the vegetables were cultivated in a robust ecosystem, thereby suggesting that the lettuce could have originated from a healthy and thriving natural environment.
