At Least 32 Dead, 700 Injured After Powerful Twin Earthquakes Hit Venezuela

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent earthquakes in Venezuela have created conditions resembling an apocalyptic scenario, as two powerful tremors claimed at least 32 lives and injured approximately 700 people on Wednesday. The aftershocks left parts of Caracas in disarray, with numerous videos circulating on social media depicting collapsing buildings and terrified residents. The quakes reportedly struck in close succession, causing significant panic among the population.

Footage from La Pastora captured the moment the first quake hit, showcasing the severe shaking that rattled the streets almost immediately. Additional videos from the capital illustrated the collapse of multi-storey buildings, with facades crumbling and structures swaying before succumbing to the violence of the tremors.

Social media was inundated with clips illustrating the chaos, as residents rushed to evacuate buildings during the intense shaking. One particularly widespread video from an airport terminal depicted the precarious situation, with the entire structures swaying as passengers and staff sought safety amidst flickering lights and rattling air vents.

Ongoing Rescue Operations and Casualty Concerns

First responders have engaged in rescue operations through the night to locate survivors trapped under the debris caused by the earthquakes. The US Geological Survey had reported the earthquakes as a 7.2 magnitude quake, followed by a 7.5 magnitude tremor approximately one minute later. These seismic events originated about 160 km west of Caracas, raising concerns about a potential increase in casualty numbers as authorities assess the damage.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez stated that numerous structures collapsed across various regions, emphasising ongoing rescue efforts aimed at saving lives. She noted that preliminary casualty figures did not yet account for the severely affected La Guaira state, located close to the capital.

Local officials confirmed fatalities in several districts, including Baruta and Chacao, where building collapses were reported. Furthermore, extensive damage to residential areas has necessitated the deployment of emergency response teams to conduct searches for trapped individuals.

International Response and Local Conditions

The earthquakes struck during a public holiday, creating scenes of chaos as residents fled into the streets amidst alarm sounds and severe shaking. Personal accounts reflect the general fear experienced by many, with one resident in eastern Caracas describing a loud crash that caused items to fall within their home. Another individual recounted a frantic rush as people screamed and rushed down staircases.

A tsunami warning was briefly issued following the tremors but was quickly retracted, as officials deemed the threat to have dissipated. In response to the natural disaster, US President Donald Trump extended an offer of assistance, confirming that the United States was prepared to support Venezuela in the aftermath. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also announced plans to deploy search-and-rescue teams along with humanitarian aid.

International expressions of solidarity came from leaders in countries such as Brazil, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic, as the mobilisation of aid began. Diosdado Cabello, the Interior Minister, indicated that rescue efforts were being executed with the resources available, highlighting the ongoing struggles to navigate collapsed structures and damaged neighbourhoods.

As hospitals in Caracas heightened their alert status in anticipation of incoming patients, classes across the nation were suspended, allowing authorities to continue damage assessment efforts. Venezuela, located on a significant seismic fault line, is notably susceptible to powerful earthquakes, with the last major quake to strike the capital occurring in 1967.
