Ashes of Twisha Sharma Immersed in Ganga at Rishikesh, Family Vows to Seek Justice

The CSR Journal Magazine

The ashes of Twisha Sharma, a victim in the notable Bhopal dowry death case, were immersed in the Ganga River at Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh on May 29. Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, expressed that his daughter held a profound connection to Rishikesh and the sacred river. During the immersion ceremony, Navnidhi remarked that this location was special to Twisha, who often spent hours by the river’s banks.

“We have come here to perform the ‘Asthi Pravah’,” Navnidhi explained. “This place held significant meaning for her, and it is essential for us to honour her memories in this manner.” He noted that this act symbolised not just the final rites but also the family’s ongoing battle for justice.

Family’s Commitment to Justice

The Sharma family is determined to continue their pursuit of justice in the face of powerful adversaries. Navnidhi stated that they are currently in the early stages of their struggle and vowed to fight until they achieve justice for Twisha. “We are hopeful that the government and judicial authorities will take decisive action in this case to set an important precedent for similar matters,” he said.

Cousin Ashish Sharma indicated that Twisha had confided in the family about various challenges she was facing, both financially and emotionally. He described how the family’s attempts to assist her encountered numerous obstacles. “Before we could intervene or bring her back, we learned of her tragic death on the 12th. The circumstances surrounding her passing are laden with suspicion,” he remarked.

He detailed the family’s struggles, noting that they faced hurdles throughout their pursuit of justice, which prompted them to seek a ‘suo motu’ intervention from the High Court. As a result, a Delhi team carried out an investigation at the site.

Public Awareness and Judicial Response

The extensive media coverage surrounding Twisha’s case has led to a heightened public awareness, influencing governmental action. Ashish mentioned that the Madhya Pradesh Government sought the Central Government’s assistance in initiating a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry. Ultimately, the Supreme Court also decided to take ‘suo motu’ cognizance of the developments in the case.

Despite the slow pace of the judicial process, Ashish expressed hope that justice would eventually be served. “Even though it may take time, we believe that persistence will yield results. Our family is determined to ensure that this situation sheds light on similar cases.” His conviction in the judicial system was clear, stating, “We are optimistic that this case will set an important precedent for future situations.”

Major Harshit Sharma, Twisha’s brother, echoed the family’s sentiments, expressing hope for a positive outcome. “There remains a flicker of hope. We are actively pursuing justice, and we are witnessing developments in this case. The involvement of the CBI and the positive action taken by the High Court gives us confidence,” he noted.
