Arvind Kejriwal, the National Convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and former Chief Minister of Delhi, has formally approached Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sachin Sharma. This communication is a response to the recent protest held at Jantar Mantar on July 20, organised by the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP). Kejriwal is seeking detailed information regarding the FIRs that were filed and the number of individuals detained during the protest.

In his letter, Kejriwal expressed concerns regarding the apparent multiple FIRs that have been registered against the participants of the protest. He stated, “I am given to understand that a number of FIRs have been registered against the people who were protesting at Jantar Mantar yesterday, demanding accountability from Prime Minister Modi about failures in the education system.” Kejriwal’s letter urged the DCP to release the names of those detained and the specifics of the FIRs in a timely manner.

Details of FIRs and Arrests Sought

The ex-Chief Minister further indicated that there are allegations that numerous individuals were taken into custody without accompanying FIRs. He requested that the information regarding both the FIRs and detainees be made publicly available to ensure legal assistance can be provided to those affected. “I request that the above two lists be put in public domain immediately so that appropriate legal help can be provided to those people,” Kejriwal noted in his correspondence.

This request follows the events of July 20, during which a group of protesters faced detentions by the police amid reports of stone-pelting and a declaration of an unlawful assembly. According to official sources, Delhi Police have filed five FIRs linked to these incidents and are currently conducting an in-depth investigation into the matter.

Reports indicate that the FIRs were filed at both Parliament Street and Connaught Place police stations and include various charges under the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, the Arms Act, 1959, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act. The police are actively reviewing more than 250 recordings from multiple sources, including mobile phone videos, CCTV cameras, drone footage, and police body cameras, to identify individuals involved in the alleged violence.

Investigations into Violence and Protest Mobilisation

On July 20, the police made available footage that appears to show incidents of stone-pelting near Connaught Place. Allegations indicate that some individuals vandalised police vehicles and directed stones at law enforcement personnel stationed near Regal Cinema in the Outer Circle of Connaught Place. Ongoing investigations aim to ascertain if any premeditated plans were made to instigate the violence that erupted during the protest.

Additionally, the police are exploring the potential use of social media platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram to facilitate the gathering of protesters prior to the incidents. The CJP’s protest, which was primarily about the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, escalated into violence as a delegation from the organisation sought to meet Union Health Minister JP Nadda and present their demands, culminating in a chaotic march towards Parliament.

As the situation unfolds, the Delhi Police continue to pursue a thorough investigation into the series of events that transpired during and after the protest, ensuring all relevant actions are documented and the underlying causes examined.
