In a tragic incident, an Army officer of Major rank lost his life while two other officers sustained injuries when their private SUV collided with a camel near the Jaisalmer Military Station on July 31, 2026. The deceased, identified as 30-year-old Major Hamza Arif, was a resident of Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

The accident took place late Thursday night while the officers were returning to the military station from Jaisalmer city. Reports indicate that the camel unexpectedly appeared on the road, leading to a collision that overturned the vehicle multiple times, dragging it approximately 100 meters before it crashed against the military boundary wall. The camel did not survive the incident.

Rescue efforts were initiated promptly, with Army personnel arriving at the site to assist the trapped officers. Major Hamza Arif was rushed to the military station for treatment, but he tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The surviving officers have been identified as Lieutenant Abhinav Rathore and Lieutenant Ayushman Gusain, who are currently receiving medical care at the Military Hospital.

Emergency Response and Investigation

The Sadar Police Station was alerted to the incident late at night, with officers dispatched to the location to conduct an investigation. Upon arriving, they discovered the deceased camel lying on the roadside and the severely damaged SUV near the military boundary wall.

According to ASI Jagdish Charan, the police took necessary actions, including removing the deceased animal from the site. The damaged vehicle is being assessed for further details on the nature of the incident. The body of Major Arif has been transported to the mortuary at Jawahar Hospital in Jaisalmer for a post-mortem examination.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation, as authorities aim to determine the contributing factors that led to this unfortunate event. Witnesses may be called upon to provide statements about the conditions leading up to the collision.

Historical Context of the Location

Notably, the location of the accident has a history of tragic incidents, as it was the site of another catastrophe a year ago when 29 passengers were tragically killed in a bus fire. This repetition raises concerns regarding the safety of the route and the need for potential preventive measures.

The local community and military personnel are reeling from the loss of Major Hamza Arif, especially considering he had been married only a month prior to the incident. The impact of such accidents reflects broader issues related to road safety, particularly on routes frequented by military personnel and civilians alike.

Authorities are expected to review the accident report thoroughly and may explore options for improving road safety measures in the area. The hope is to prevent future tragedies and ensure the well-being of all road users in the region.
