General Vishwa Nath Sharma passed away at the age of 96 on July 31, 2026. His life began on June 4, 1930, in London, where he was born. He received his education at Sherwood College in Nainital before moving on to the Prince of Wales’ Royal Indian Military College in Dehradun.

Sharma served as the Chief of the Army Staff from 1988 to 1990, marking a significant period in India’s military history. He made history as the first President’s Commissioned Officer to ascend to the position of Army Chief after being commissioned into the Indian Army in June 1950.
